Hey gang,

I want to open by giving a little background on myself here. I've been on the forums for a few months now and have tasted (I think) almost every aspect of the Black Hat IM world. I've seen the highs and lows of almost every method thread and done my fair share of poor decision making when it comes to trying to make money through IM. And I guess today is the day that I finally snapped, Black Hat is just too much of a time sink for me to continue to attempt to make headway with it. It's a shame, because I've learned a lot about the internet and how SEO works, what backlinks are and how to rank a website through Black Hat methods etc, and I really feel that without that knowledge, I wouldn't be able to sit down and decide to put all that aside and try something wholly whitehat.

I think it's appropriate that I start this, because I've decided that it's high time that I take off the Black hat and put the White Hat on in regards to my IM ventures. I won't lie, I've sunk TOO much money into Black Hat Methods only to have them blow up in my face and not produce any kind of meaningful income. I won't go into detail because I could be here all day, suffice to say, I'm looking at turning over a new leaf, starting a new website, new hosting & a new niche. I hope to share this journey with you all, and I will at every appropriate step of the way try to keep everyone informed of how things are going and perhaps some of the pitfalls that I come across whilst I'm doing it.

My Gameplan:

My overall gameplan is to start up a review website for my niche. I have a initial goal of $5 a day through various streams of IM. From my blackhat days I already have the following accounts which I will be using (just as a white hat guy now):

- Clickbank
- Amazon Affiliate Program
- Adsense

I also have the following skills:

- Wordpress "guru" status
- SEO knowledge and practice
- PHP & JS programming ability
- Website Design and Development

There are also a bunch of other single product affiliate programs that I have signed up to, but for the sake of protecting my niche, I won't put them here. All in all, I believe that I have a decent group of products and advertising to be able to knock over my first goal.

My timeline is infinite - once I hit my first goal, I'll obtain a new one. It will probably be a double up each time I hit my goal.

Something that I have considered already is how I should go about writing the articles for the site. I personally don't have the time to write long product reviews on my own, and am a little stumped as to how I can get over this step without going into some grey areas. I recognise that fiverr has a huge number of people that are happy to review products, and I think that there are also some good article exchange websites that I might be able to use. But I'm really not sure. If anyone is reading this, and has a good idea about how to get access to a lot of good reviews, let me know via PM!

So - today is day one of what I expect will be a VERY long and enduring process, but I consider this to be a hobby and I don't expect things to take off quick smart. A final point to put on this is that I'd like to keep myself to around $200 offset capital, by that I mean at any one time I can only have a maximum of $200 in the red column. As soon as something comes into the green column, I can spend a bit more. I'm putting this hard-cap on myself now so that I don't spiral out of control with spending, and end up with a deficit that's too large to close with IM.

My plan for today + tomorrow:

[] Research niche further - can't decide to go smaller into my niche or remain larger
[] Register a decent EMD domain name
[] Buy Hosting with a good host (I'll probably end up using Arvixe because I've used them in the past and they're great!)
[] Research for any advertising networks that fall into my niche as to display content appropriate advertising on my site

PiggyBank (Opening):

$200.00 AUD
| $0.00 AUD

Income & Outgoings:

Income:
Advertising: $0.00 AUD
Clickbank: $0.00 AUD
Amazon: $0.00 AUD

Outgoings:
NULL

PiggyBank (Closing):

$200.00 AUD
| $0.00 AUD

Total Usable Income: $200.00

I'll try and keep this thread updated with the above format every day / few days as I go along. This is as much for me as it is for you guys, it keeps my motivation up, and it'll hopefully go to show that through white hat means it's possible generate a decent income through IM.

OK!

Day 1:

Today has been a pretty big day of spending to be honest, the following costs have been incurred:

- Wordpress Theme / Plugin Package for Review Website - $89 AUD
- Fiverr Gig for creating a good logo for my new Company Name - $5 AUD
- Domain Name Registration - $9.91 AUD

I already have hosting so have added my domain name to one of my hosting accounts that I run already. So I don't need to sink money into that as well. It was my original intent to go all organic and get hosting afresh as well, but I decided against it as that would bring me too close to going into the red.

So, from yesterday:

[x] Research niche further - can't decide to go smaller into my niche or remain larger
[x] Register a decent EMD domain name
[x] Buy Hosting with a good host (I'll probably end up using Arvixe because I've used them in the past and they're great!)
[] Research for any advertising networks that fall into my niche as to display content appropriate advertising on my site

So I had a look at my niche, and I think ultimately, I would get better hits and be able to SEO my site better and advertise it better if I left it at an open / semi open niche. So I've decided to stay large(ish) for my niche. I've registered a pretty good EMD domain name, it's cool and funny and frankly I was pretty impressed that it was still available, so I snapped it up quicksmart last night. As I said above I don't need hosting as I just slapped my domain name up onto another of my hosting accounts! I'm rolling over my advertising network research into tomorrows bin as I didn't really get much of a chance to look at it last night. So, lets to a rundown of tomorrow:

[] Research for any advertising networks that fall into my niche as to display content appropriate advertising on my site
[] Do some more research into review writing and article writing - more and more I'm feeling that I'm actually going to end up writing them, I can bang out a fair few words p/m
[] Discuss SEO plan and look for decent SEO plugins to go into Wordpress
[] Get onto Social Media and start getting accounts set up, I think I'll be starting with: Facebook, Twitter & Tumblr perhaps? I know I want three, just not sure which third one I should use
[] Start the VERY long process of looking at possible products to open with

The Theme / Plugin package that I bought comes with a really cool coming soon plugin which is going to allow me to do a heap of work behind the scenes and hopefully drum up some hype about my site before it goes live... Maybe, haha. On the social media front, I'm SO very drawn to getting enhanceviews followers or stuff, but I know that I need to grow those crowds organically, and luckily I have a few friends that I know are interested in my niche so it might be easier then I'm making it out to be to start getting some followers together.

PiggyBank (Opening):

$200.00 AUD
| $0.00 AUD

Income & Outgoings:

Income:
Advertising: $0.00 AUD
Clickbank: $0.00 AUD
Amazon: $0.00 AUD

Outgoings:
Theme / Plugin Package: $89.00 AUD
Fiverr Gig for Logo: $5.05 AUD
Domain Registration: $9.91 AUD

PiggyBank (Closing):

$200.00 AUD
- $103.96 AUD

= $96.04

Total Usable Income: $96.04

Well, that was $100 easy spent wasn't it... I guess I'm further along in the grand scheme of things then I first anticipated. I'm really quite close to getting things together, it's just a matter of planning it properly so it doesn't just peter out into nothing without any views. I'll update again tomorrow.

Whelp, Day 2:

So - today wasn't as big of a day as yesterday, I spent some time setting up my hosting and installing wordpress etc. etc. I'm now in the nice honeymoon phase before I then get back into the hard stuff. So to cap off what I managed to get done today:

[x] Research for any advertising networks that fall into my niche as to display content appropriate advertising on my site
[x] Do some more research into review writing and article writing - more and more I'm feeling that I'm actually going to end up writing them, I can bang out a fair few words p/m
[x] Discuss SEO plan and look for decent SEO plugins to go into Wordpress
[x] Get onto Social Media and start getting accounts set up, I think I'll be starting with: Facebook, Twitter & Tumblr perhaps? I know I want three, just not sure which third one I should use
[] Start the VERY long process of looking at possible products to open with

Well - A good overall complete rate. From the top I did some research into advertising networks that have solely my niche in mind - but they're all approval based and need around 10k UV p/month to be looking at my website. Not sure if I'm even getting one yet! This has left me with a few choices - and I think i'll probably go for the latter:

- Use my google adsense account which is currently just sitting there not doing anything (really)
- Use my affiliate programming promotional tools to advertise. I think I'll go for this option and see how it goes because I guess that's really targeted advertising that I can use. Just means I have to sign up to a lot of different individual affiliate's websites to get their ads.

Article writing is off the table now, I'll do it, I can't outsource easily and I have a particular flow that I'm in wanting to stick to in order to make things easy to read through.

SEO plan based around some Wordpress SEO plugins as well as my social media penetration, hoping to get a lot of hits coming in through my Twitter and Facebook

Social media is on the way, set up my twitter account and authenticated it any everything, Facebook is still in the pipeline as it'll be running off of my main Facebook account and I want to actually have something to link to before I go ahead and start telling people about it.

Products to open with are going to be pretty easy in the end - I've got my Click bank products to work with as well as anything that I can scrape together off of Amazon, I'll probably just go through Clickbank and put anything on there that is <50-60 Gravity (I think, I need to look at that.)

Plan for tomorrow:

[] Tweak Wordpress Template design
[] Put temp logo onto website (I can sort of design it myself...)
[] Write a few articles + link through to affiliate product
[] Map out the best way to categorize my reviews parents and children etc

PiggyBank (Opening):

$96.04

Income & Outgoings:

Income:
Advertising: $0.00 AUD
Clickbank: $0.00 AUD
Amazon: $0.00 AUD

Outgoings:
Akismet (Wordpress Plugin) Signup: $5.00 AUD

PiggyBank (Closing):

$96.04 - $5.00 AUD

= $91.04

So no real surprises on the income front, just a small outgoing for spam comments. That's it!

I'll update again tomorrow with some more stats! I'm wanting to hover around the $90 mark until I'm up and running.

There wasn't a lot that happened yesterday I was busy with my real work so I didn't get a chance to get too much done.

[x] Write a few articles + link through to affiliate product
[x] Map out the best way to categorize my reviews parents and children etc

Income & Outgoings:

Income:
Advertising: $0.00 AUD
Clickbank: $0.00 AUD
Amazon: $0.00 AUD

Outgoings:
Fiverr gig to have a article written: $5.00 AUD

OK! Alright! Sorry for no updates in a long time, I've had a devil of a time at my full time job and no real time to post up anything worthwhile. But I have a spare moment now to give a brief update on what's been going on! A bullet point rundown:

- Launched my website
- Got a few fiverr gigs to get some content
- Started doing a LOT of social marketing with my real life friends helping me out
- Began the long search for better things to get on clickbank

There has been sales! Oh boy has there been sales!

Let me talk about my bullet points first:

- Launching my website: this was a pretty simple affair, I took the maintenance page down and pinged a whole bunch of services & worked with Google Webmaster Tools to get things indexing as fast as I could in a white hat manner. Using Statpress, my first day had about 80 UV's... Which was followed up by a measly 5UV the next day, so that's an important KPII for me to keep track of and improve on.

- Fiverr Gigs: I won't go into too much detail because it may very well give away my niche, but I purchased a few fiverr gigs to write some content for my website, product reviews that were specifically created with keywords that I knew would be popular for my niche.

- Social Marketing: Well this has to be the hardest thing that I've done for the site so far. Short of getting someone to set up my Web 2.0 stuff for me, I don't know how I can do it other then manually going through each of my social bookmarks and throwing a new link on there once or twice a day... Anyone that has a good social strategy feel free to get into contact with me to explain. Remember White hat only!

- More products: Well, for this I got a subscription to cbengine, and am keeping that open 24/7 to see any new products roll in that I can capitalize on. That was $29.

So! The low down? In the last few weeks, I've made a grand total of $100.09 from Clickbank products. I have to say, I'm VERY impressed, but it's only the tip of the iceberg for me, I want to be making > $100 per day. But right now what I'm settling for is a single SALE per day, something which has eluded me so far... So, doing the figures (Keep in mind it's been a week and a bit since my last update):

PiggyBank (Opening):

$86.04

Income & Outgoings:

Income:
Advertising: $0.01 AUD
Clickbank: $100.09 AUD
Amazon: $0.00 AUD

Outgoings:
Fiverr gig to have another article written (plus 500 words): $10.00 AUD

PiggyBank (Closing):

$86.04 + $100.10 - $10.00 AUD

= $176.14

Super happy about that figure! Nearly back up to my initial $200 capital! So what's next for me:

[] Get more articles written / re-write current articles to better suit the "call-to-action" mindset.
[] Do more social advertising, this is a hard point because without blackhat I can't really get auto-followers on my social media... Again, advice required!
[] Start looking at Amazon as a stream of income
[] Start generating powerful backlinks, I'm a bit clueless as to how to do this without a black hat also

Again, apologies for not updating things sooner, I'll try and keep on top of it now that I'm live and things are happening!

Well damn congrats on the sales. Also yay! there is another Australian on here :D

As far as social media is concerned well that is always a tough one, I usually automate it through hoot suite or something. If you want to go really hardcore then Cash's social media blueprint would be the way to go. Heck just doing the tweets, facebook and tumbler section would be a good way to go but if you are going white hat I would strongly recommend videos reviews to go in your articles as well. Also post them on youtube and use Cash's distribution system to help rank the video in youtube and google as well as your own page.

If you looking for other things that social backlinks use Scritty's SEOdemon as he provides very good support such as experience manuals, videos and lists for each platform. Or you could try Mathew woodward tutorials . These are not really black hat since they just automate a large amount of the work involved (if you do it correctly). It's either that or head on over to the market place and look for some low cost but good quality work from other BHW members.

If you are really intent of sticking to white hat then find other players and do a bit of guest blogging/cross promotion with other websites. You can also comment on their articles and leave a link back to your blog ( or you could already do that with the google alerts method).

Most importantly BUILD YOUR LIST, have an opt in and when you get the time create a freebie to give away. That is where the money is.

Best of luck on your journey.

G'day Mate :).

Thanks so much for the advice, I'm at work at the moment, but I'll get a look in at this stuff when I get home tonight and see what it's all about. I'm not opposed to "Gray hat" stuff, or automation of otherwise whitehat techniques, what I really want to avoid is things like scrapebox blasting and fake traffic generation - things like that. I really want to keep on the straight and narrow in that sense. I've got an opt-in and haven't had anyone nibble at it yet, I suspect it's because I don't really have anything free to offer anyone... My niche doesn't really lend itself to freebies. Biut I'll go on a search for something.

Thanks again! I'll update on some stuff later tonight also.

Cheers

Well - after taking a leaf out of Uppa839's book, I've gone about learning a little bit more about how to get ont op of the SEO side of things. I've made some large jumps in the mindset of the white hat web master. Mostly what I'm now doing, is when I write a new article, run it through a few different SEO based programs (Traffic Travis, SEO Yoast etc) to get a general feel for what I'm going to get in terms of a result. It's more of a rough guide, and it's ONLY for my money site, nothing else. I've yet to look at the other stuff that was linked in the post above. I've thought of a few important things to include in my posts aside from my income and outgoings - I need to be telling everyone UV's and Clickbank Hops / Amazon Affiliate clicks as well, as they give a pretty good metric of through traffic. So - last few days, not much has happened.

I've had a pretty lousy few days, hops been going down, traffic not brilliant...

Sales: $0.00
Hops: 20 (this needs to go up... fast)

Site stats:

Screen Shot 2013-05-22 at 9.20.05 AM.png

So, I think as a good first stop I want to get those figures to over 100 per day, both hops as well as site UV's.

I won't bother with money, because I didn't spend any, or get any.

Glad to see your sticking with it,

In terms of helping with your mind set I want to make one thing clear. You should step away from this thought of white hat. Technically nothing we do is either white hat or black it is always some where in the middle (well aside from the illegal operations but that goes without saying). You should not look at white hat and say that that is the only proper way to rank a site, nor should you say the same thing about black hat. If anything say it is grey (or blue whatever your preference) purely for your own peace of mind.

Firstly, what I posted above are methods of building back links which do take time and money but pay off very well if done correctly but I think I was a few steps ahead of where you are at. Let's go back to the very basic's. Fuien's Basic guide post is probably the best place for you to start, if you haven't done those you should start with them.

Second you should set up some google alerts for blog post and forum posts using meathead's method. A good way to include a link to your website and find some sites that get a lot of traffic.

Third and finally you are going to learn to write an article a day, it doesn't matter if you publish it or not but the more you write the better you will be and the more content for your site. if there is one thing that is essential for a website it is content. Use posts you find in google alerts and use The SEO method of writing a unique article.

These are good methods because they cost nothing but your time and effort. Also they serve a good purpose of working your skills so you are not completely relent on outsourcing. If you earn enough money then you don't have to worry but for now you have to put in the hard yards.

I am basing this off of what you have said so I could be wrong about where you are at. But the best know their basics, if you don't know about even some of the things I have posted here you should study those before you try to take on Scritty's, Cash's or Matt's methods otherwise you could wind up wasting money and your time
