First of all you have to do some proper research and understand TTFB.

If your time to first byte is between 4.9 and 6.8 seconds, then clearly you are on shared hosting.
    Free tips:

    (1) Reduce Mysql queries
    (2) Optimize the theme so that there are less objects rendered
    (3) Implement caching
    (4) Tweak the htaccess
    (5) Tweak apache / ngix for performance
    (6) Tweak my.cnf for your applications

Do as much as you can, and if TTFB is still too high, clearly you need an VPS or dedicated server to reduce the TTFB further.

My bid? I havent got the time to do the job anyway, but I hope the above helps you.

I am really greatful that you have written these things.. I am on VPS hosting from HOstgator..

As you have given me so many suggestiions, maybe u can write some helpful links for all of them. I will appreciate if you can let me know where shall i go and read information regarding tweaking etc..

How to reduce mysql queries? that i think will play major factor in improving TTFB.. Your reply wil be really appreciable..

    Thanks

    Your welcome.

There is an awful lot of reading and research involved if you havent done apache tweaking, wordpress tweaking and so on.

First thing I would do would be to read and apply the techniques here:
    http://www.mgt-commerce.com/blog/magento-on-steroids-best-practice-for-highest-performance/

NOTE: The above link mentions editing the "MySQL Configuration". What is means by that is to edit a special file (with SSH) called My.cnf and save it.

    Then I would do this:
    http://www.gxjansen.com/101-ways-to-speed-up-your-magento-e-commerce-website/

Another tweak is to go to cpanel and on the search box (its on the left) type in "optimize" without the quotes ("").
Click the icon and enable compression for all content, and save.

The above should help and keep you busy for a few days.

I have personally managed to reduce the amount of time websites take to load by 3x to 5x with all these methods, without needing to spend any money on upgrading etc.

If I remember correctly hostgator charges you something between $5 and $15 to activate SSH access (also called shell access).

If you have never done something like this before, make SURE you back up the previous configuration before you do anything.
