I recently got a penalty for my site which is for my local offline business. It is not that competitive but I dont want to be hit again and have down time as it is really affecting my business. My plan is to get top 5 with 3 different sites all going for the same keywords. Can I get penalty/sandboxed if G sees that Im trying to do this? It would also serve as split testing to see which site performs the best. Any precautions I should take. OR is it all good?

Back in the day they used to penalize when one guy took over the serps, if they found out of course. These days tripadvisor, ebay and amazon.com all but dominate every niche on google, I guess they stopped caring about that...so go for it, just keep the footprints low.

Just try to vary your footprint and you should be fine. The amount of effort you put into it should be less than the return on your time.

So if you someone was searching for you and you usually get 10 leads a day , and make $1 per lead then I would put in more than $300 trying to vary my footprint. Private registration, hosting on different servers, different templates etc shouldn't even cost that much.

    /\/\ what he said...

Different hosting providers, different (or at least, private) whois info on the domains, and no silly things like having them all on the same WMT account!

Don't use GWT period. Separate hosting per site is a must, use a separate tel number on all sites (twilio). By using twilio you can also see which is generating the most leads as well by looking at the call logs.

Different theme, hosting, private whois, and content, I dont know about the phone numbers, I suggest to have contact form rather giving away same contact number and email address.

So you guys figure different hosting for sure...really dont like the idea of transferring and extra monthly fees but I guess that would be a smart move...

I would do exactly what everyone above mentioned. As long as you use different hosting and whois as well as content, I think it would be fine. You can even go as far as having different numbers with forwarding, but that might become expensive.

Ok Im going to go with different hosting, content, and private whois. But my name and picture will be on all the abouts and also all my client testimonial pictures are going to be the same. Is this going to be a problem if I change the name of the picture and alt text of it?

I honestly don't think Google is out to get each and every one of us. If you get penalized is because you did something terribly obvious. Unless Google does a custom research on your sites then I wouldn't even worry about it. They have waaaay more important things to do instead of trying to go after new sites.
Just be smart with your backlinks and you should be completely fine.

I rank 3 websites for my local businesses and they're doing just fine. Two ranking top #5 and the other one ranking #7
