So I am optimizing my homepage for SEO. I have a lot of smaller keywords I want to rank for point at the homepage of my site. Do I put all keywords in the metatags, etc or how would I put them on my site on my homepage for the keywords to rank. I am completely new at this as you can tell. I could point them at other pages etc. Should I used them in alt text etc? I dont have 50 pictures to name.

Can someone give me some pointers. I think I have read that the big G does not like meta tags.

I would create separate pages for each keyword (Unless they are basically the same keyword) and have a links structure that flows the links juice downwards to these keyword pages. Targetting loads of keywords on 1 page is going to be difficult.

For low competition keywords, group the keywords according to the sense they make and create pages for each group of keywords.. For high competition keywords, just go ahead and create separate pages for each..
