Bullshit really. Firstly, for starters you can stick with semi-dedicated proxies, which you share with 2 - 3 people. They are not that great as full private ones, but will make the job done and they are at least half cheaper.

Second, he overdid it with captcha costs. He didn't even mention Captcha Breaker or Captcha Sniper which will return your investment in a few days. For GSA SER, this is a must. You will be using captcha services mostly just for Tier 1 links, but then again, depends on how you want to approach your SEO.

Third, you don't necessarilly need a VPS. If you have some older laptop with 4gb ram and some decent processor and a good bandwidth, you can use that as a VPS as well.

Fourthly (is this how it's spelled?), there are no content costs involved at all and trust me, content is probably the most important part when it comes to SEO. You want amazing content for your websites and at least half decent for your Tier 1. The rest isn't that important and Kontent Machine should suffice.

    HOWEVER

After the recent Penguin 2.1 update, nobody can be sure about what works and what doesn't, since it seems a bit random. So for whoever who wants to buy SEO software and start from scratch himself, you should wait for a few days for dust to settle and for analysis of what's going on.

    My 2 euro cents.

IMO, it's only expensive for the newbs since the experts already know the shortcuts to keep cost low to maintain a ridiculous ROI. ;)

Shittons of affiliate links... I'm sure he wants you to believe that's the cost. But you don't start like that. You start small scale, outsource some of the things until you find what's working for you. Only at this point will it make sense to buy the tool.

    Partialy agree.
Yes, the costs are less, but what about the profitability and other factors?
WH = Long term profits (usually)
BH = Short term and possibly medium term profitability

So, you also need to consider the strategy,
is it Churn and Burn vs Rank and Bank?

(Disclaimer: Many IM'ers are running around like deer in headlights at the moment,
because even the noble Saint Matt Cutts doesn't even know if the light is shinging ON him, or AT him )

Not picking on you here, you just had the most detailed response -

I'm assuming Jacob is writing from the perspective of "what's best" and not "what can work".

He does mention Captcha Breaker, as soon as GSA SER gets listed under software.

True, but not everyone has the things you mentioned handy, in which case a VPS is a great option. Regardless, good luck scaling with old laptops.

Not sure what you mean. He goes into great detail about content and potential costs. If you mean content for your money site, you're right, but the post is about off-site SEO.

Just my thoughts as someone who has thoroughly investigated a lot of the software / methods he talks about before making any purchases. It's actually a pretty realistic post.

I've watched a lot of very expensive "white hat" sites get crushed over the years. White hatness is by no means a way to ensure high ranking, in fact, it's not even a way to ensure you rank at all, even for a short while.

Uhm... To a programmer. Black Hat SEO is cheap. Pays for itself. Pays for any white hat techniques. Pays for your car. House. I mean, make a bot. Profit. GG.

I chat with Jacob a little and I understand he uses a lot of proxies (hundreds) and a VA. That's a huge outlayt and if you only have a few dozen URL's to promote a month it's overkill.

Jacobs method seems spot on - but he has scaled it "pro-style" -

I would guess that starting from scratch an outley of between $500 and $600 up-front and $100 ongoing monthly is a likely bottom line to get going. Scale up when you make it back..with interest.

Black Hat? White Hat? Costs are little different. A membership to Moz (which gives you nothing you couldn't get for a fraction elsewhere) costs hundreds of dollars a month alone - and is pretty much a waste of time.

True Cost of Any Kind Of SEO depends on the depth of your SEO Knowledge.. Without good understanding of how SEO works (and changes), Any kind of automation tools or proxies or vps or system would not yield desired results.

Cost is not important if we speak about SEO, only the ROI matters, and the time spent.
If you spend $10,000 a month and you earn 20K because of that, I say you understand not only SEO, but also business.
Expensive tools and accesses to special services are for people who can afford them. I still can not understand people here who have a MNS with potential of maximum 300/month paying 200/month for some stupid service here, such as "private" network posts renting...

I think his point here is this is about what it takes to step out there and do it right. At any point you can substitute anything you can do yourself, or something you own.

But of you were the checkbook with none of that, this is a blueprint you can understand, finance, and implement.
