So, I've noticed a HUGE number of people making a critical mistake on BHW that's really costing them.

Take a look at this image and tell me if you notice anything interesting. This is just a screengrab of the Black Hat SEO forum from today, sorted by when threads were created posted.

I've pointed out with blue arrows the posts with the most replies.Shift your beady little eyes over to the left and see if you notice anything special about those posts with more than 1 reply.

That's right: They all have avatars.

You're all marketing experts, right? You know that images make people click things.

All things being equal, it *almost* doesn't matter what your topic / question / thread subject is.
It doesn't even matter if your post has been around longer.

What matters is whether or not you have an avatar.

That's right: You'll get way more responses if you just use an avatar.

Click here for more information about how to add an avatar (number of posts required etc).

Click here to add one regardless of how many posts you have.

    Oh, and interesting bonus:
Take a look at that little green arrow in my image. Notice that it's the one thread with an avatar that only has one response.

Why do you think that is?

Best answer wins a special prize.

Some of the members on here, especially the new ones, are more likely to respond to threads that have simple questions or use specific keywords such as girl, how to, backlink, Matt Cutts, money site, Google, web 2.0, or PBN; either so they can answer those questions with half-baked responses or so they can berate the OP. Having an avatar doesn't always matter, otherwise threads like my suggestion thread from June would've received more feedback (hint, hint).

In the case of the posts that didn't get too many responses, many of those threads are either overlooked, can't be skimmed by post count-inflating members, or require knowledge about something specific, albeit not necessarily anything esoteric. For example, I was actually the member who responded to that "Weird https issue" thread in your image, and that question required knowledge of the Google Search Console, CloudFlare, and URL canonicalisation in order to answer correctly.

Additionally, while that thread you pointed to with the green arrow was only created 4 hours ago (I'm aware they were sorted by creation date), some people just get unlucky when they create threads as there are other, easier threads to respond to above them.

*Meanwhile, all the users with no avatars are scrambling to add one.*

I guarantee that if you check a representative sampling of any part of this forum you will see that having an avatar improves the number of replies that you get. (And the views, obviously).

Our eyes are drawn toward images simply as a means of separating out information. If you're skimming this site, looking for interesting topics, you're naturally going to look closer at topics that have images associated with them. In the case of BHW, those images are avatars. On other forums, you can attach images or 'icons'. (Keep in mind this also doubles as a way to see what threads are made by users who have more than x numbers of posts, or aren't posted by some fly-by-night spammer.)

    Here's some stats for ya'll:

Facebook: Photo posts get 39% more interaction than posts without photos

Email: Just using the word “video” in an email subject line boosts open rates by 19%, click-through rates by 65% and reduces unsubscribes by 26%.

In general, researchers have found that colored visuals increase people's willingness to read a piece of content by 80%.

For every one of the amateurs who ignore this bit of wisdom, there's a professional marketer out their laughing all the way to the bank with their highly converting marketing copy that sucks but has a picture of boobs. Why do you all think so many users have hot women as their icons/avatars?

My guess is, if you think I'm wrong, it's because you think you don't fall for marketing tactics.

I totally agree that it doesn't always matter if you have an avatar. But in marketing and copywriting you won't find something that works all the time, just things that work better on average, over time. On top of avatars there's definitely keywords you can use as well (like 'weird' and 'girl').

This thread already has more responses than I expected, because I figured people would be drawn to my totally click-bait subject line either in anger or in interest. Or both.

nobody said that you were wrong, just that your evidence sucks and you are stating basic marketing facts that we already knew

It's easy to say evidence sucks. Waiting for someone to post evidence to the contrary.

It might seem like basic marketing facts, but a HUGE number of people on the site don't have avatars. It's literally the easiest thing you can do to improve how people respond to you. Feels like maybe people are worried I gave away a big secret....?

    Are you serious?

Some people just don't want avatars. That has nothing to do with the freaking response rate on this site. If someone asks a question and I've got an answer, I'm going to help them, avatar or not. And a lot of other members on this site are like that. In fact, some of the longest threads on here were made by people with no avatars.

Ffs how dumb do you think we are?

Really dude. I want to know. How dumb do you think people on this forum actually are?

Here, let me help you out.

Notice the image below. The blue represents marketplace threads. They don't count. They're selling a service. Obviously they have a lot of replies.

The pink represents threads by people with no avatars. Notice something?

If you said "They have more replies than the other threads" you are correct.

This is a random screenshot, but what you stated isn't always the case, as clearly shown by the evidence I just presented.

    Now go have a seat.

You have mentioned my thread here which is fine but one of the thing that I want to point out to mods and other members here is that there is a lot of bot responses going around lately. Either they will be generic like "good luck on your journey" with no other comments and same happens with question threads where basically most have not read it and its just general ya go ahead types.

not hating, but to prove your point you're going to need some better evidence
