I am wondering how legal / illegal this is

There is a certain website that requires a phone number. I need a lot of accounts there. The phone number has to be legit, cannot be virtual.

When I was selling on craigslist I remember getting these scam texts asking me to send them a verification code. I hated those guys. But now I am thinking about joining the dark side and doing the same.

I guess I am wondering, if I trick people into verifying my accounts, and get caught, "how much time" am I looking at? This sounds like wire fraud to me. Is this activity that I describe that bad or I am just being paranoid? do they have bigger fish to fry or they will come after me? I am in the US by the way.

What do you mean by 'the number has to be legit, cannot be virtual'? If you can rent a number (or a range of numbers) that can accept SMS verification codes, then how the website can say if they are real or virtual?

what do you mean bro? I guess you have never verified anything in your life. of course they can tell the difference between a real cell phone number and a virtual number.

Well, I used a bunch of what you call 'virtual' phone numbers to verify some Google accounts and they worked like a charm. How do you think they can check if you got a real phone with a real SIM card in it?

I am not verifying google. But a lot of websites, including google, have a way of knowing if the number is real or not.

Try smspva, if what you need to verify isn't on the list, contact them so they can add what you need verified. If you don't want to disclose your websites, I guess, you have no other cheap option. Either way, I won't go on the path you said. Is not worth it. Try to find other solutions.

It sounds as if it is not a time problem but rather a civil issue but there are many options to get numbers.
