Hey, could any of you US citizens answer me a few questions as i plan to visit soon to open a bank account in your wonderful country.

What city should i visit? I was thinking miami as i'm from Venezuela, though i'm not traveling with a visa nor Venezuelan passport but rather with the visa waiver program with Portuguese passport as i'm also a Portuguese citizen.

I should open the account with the Portuguese passport, right? Not with the Venezuelan one since i have no visa for it.

How can i save on food? Where could i buy cheap food that won't kill me and how much would i be spending per day?

I haven't looked into hotels or that sort of thing, should i go for hotels or is there a way to rent a room for a month for cheaper than i would spend in a hotel?

What bank do you advice me to open accounts in? I'm thinking Capital One, Chase and citibank.

Not sure if you could answer this one but, is it okay to use a Venezuelan address if i open the account under a Portuguese passport? I know i'll need to provide them with a US based address, but i also think they'll probably ask me for my actual foreign address and for me to verify it...

    Thanks!

Why would you need a USA bank account ? Banks don't work in your country?

Exactly. I rather not go into detail as i have done so a thousand times, but this country is shit, has shit laws, shit economy. Long story short commies took over it. Bank accounts here are only for our own currency, can't receive nor send internationally.

Why would you prefer USA over Portugal, for the distance from Venezuela?
Here you've banks where you can open an account without withdraw any money and giving you 0% annual commissions.

Many reasons, but for example one of the reasons is: I can only attach a US bank account to my Venezuelan paypal account which is where i receive most if not all my money and i want to start withdrawing it.

Please don't tell me to open a payoneer account and to use its us based bank account for global payment service. I'm trying to move away from one electronic processor and it's not to go into another.

I don't think it's going to be as simple as you expect. You're going to need proof to open a bank account and the chances are they'll start asking questions when they see you're not a US resident. You will be a tourist.

I'm not saying it's impossible, and there's some banks that might do it, but they will ask you questions.

Your best bet is to get a list of banks in the US and phone them all to ask if a tourist can open an account. Ask what documents you need.

They will be able to answer any questions.

Thanks, i actually saved the numbers this morning and will be calling them first thing tomorrow, it's possible as i have friends who've done it, lots actually. Most of the time you just need a friends US address the bank will send your docs to, you'll fill the non resident form and you won't be taxed, and you need at least 3 types of proof of identity, like passport, national id and drivers license.

I just asked here because i always like to hear other peoples experience/knowledge on the topic.

I could google/ask other friends all of the questions i made here and actually already have, but as i said i like to learn from different people/different sources..

That's probably your best bet to be honest. Most people on here wouldn't know.

Wish it actually was from anywhere, it isn't. Can't do that as a Venezuelan guy, already tried/asked, but thanks anyway!

You can visit any city in the U.S. to open a U.S. bank account.

You can use either passport. A visa is not required. The entry stamp in your passport is sufficient.

You can eat at any fast food restaurant or purchase from major supermarkets. You can spend about $7 per day on food

It is cheaper to get a motel and pay weekly or monthly.

I advise to open a bank account at Bank of America

If you use Venezuelan passport then you have to use Venezuelan address. If you use Portuguese passport then you have to use Portuguese passport. You won't need to verifiy your foreign address. All mail correspondence will be sent to your U.S. based address.

I understand your pain. I went with somebody to open an acc at Chase Bank and the process it's quite easy. They asked for an ID and he used his national ID (as far as I remember).

About food, well it depends on how far you want to go. You can solve food for a few bucks, like eating Mcdonalds or BK. Or even save more by buying stuff at Walmart. I think 8-10 bucks a day is quite a safe limit.

About roof, well you might find cheap places but take into account that in Miami and the nearby areas public transportation is often awful or practically non-existant. Take this into account when finding a place.

Depends from what kind of food do you want to eat,if you are ok with eating fast food, you can get by with around ~15$ for a day.Cheapest way to get a room is to rent it through airbnb, don't forget to use someones affiliate link, this way you both will get some extra $.Also when registering for a bank account don't forget to bring proof of residence.

    1. You're visiting Florida? I've never been there. If you were visiting California or Arizona, I could tell you.

    2. I don't know.

    3. Cheap food... That won't kill you?

If you can find a Rubio's in the area you're visiting, then go there. It's somewhat cheap and the food is great.

    4. I really don't like hotels, no matter how "nice" they are, so I wouldn't know.

    5. I like Chase. They have lower monthly fees than other banks that they'll waive for if you maintain a balance of $1500/month. http://www.thesimpledollar.com/free-business-checking/

    6. I wouldn't know.
