    Hey guys,

I know that companies can track down who has downloaded torrents of their movies and send out DMCA and copyright warnings, however are they able to track you if rather than using torrents - you download via Rapidshare or Megaupload?

    Just wanted to find out.

    Thanks!

The reason people get C&D letters from the RIAA, MPAA, etc. is because they are caught in a swarm of seeds/leechers and their IP is recorded. They automatically forward these letters to the ISP's based off your IP and from there the ISP decides if they forward it to you.

When you use a site like Rapidshare or Megaupload, you are connected to noone except the server. If anyone's going to get a C&D letter while using a service like this, it's going to be the site.

Tukim's answer is good but let me add: the site can always try to rat you out and, assuming they've kept records, provide them to the folks who wrote the letter. In fact, the letter will probably demand them.

Of course people can always use one of the really inexpensive proxy services.
