Can someone tell me how tor should be set up? I downloaded it within the vidalia bundle but if it's enabled in firefox, I cannot access anything online.
??
If i then disable it, I'm good to go. I went to the Vidalia site but there isn't any info on setting it up? I'm clueless on this, any help would be appreciated.

Hi loclhero,

Is Privoxy also started? In your taskbar, look for the blue circle with a white "P" in it.

If it's not there, you will need to start Privoxy from the START menu.

You should also have the green onion for Vidalia in the taskbar. (well, it should be green if you are connected to the TOR network.)

Let us know if that has helped.

Chris

Yeah, Vidalia and Privoxy must both be started.

Wow...I don't even see privoxy here and I did know you needed it. I just tried to d/l the plugin but it's sandboxed??

Hi loclhero,

Not sure what plugin you are referring to.

Privoxy should be installed when you installed the Vidalia bundle. Then if it's not started, you can start it manually from Start - Programs - Vidalia Bundle - Privoxy

That's my problem, it's not even in there. It's not in the bundle.

Everything you need is here.

hxxp://www.torproject.org/dist/vidalia-bundles/vidalia-bundle-0.1.2.19-0.0.16.exe

Okay, the only thing I can assume is that when I first d/l'ed, I unchecked parts of the bundle. Pretty much something I would do.
So I reinstalled and it's all there but now I'm asked for a control password when I try to start tor?

Hi loclhero,

When starting, you shouldn't have to start TOR. Vidalia should start TOR for you. If it's asking for a password when Vidalia is starting up, I've never experienced this so can't help there.

You should only have to start Vidalia and Privoxy. If they are set to start when Windows starts, you shouldn't have to start anything after rebooting.

Chris

I set up TOR on a new machine twice a week, I honestly dont think I have ever been asked for a password..

not sure wtf that was all about but i rebooted and it seems fine.
thanks guys

Not sure what was up. Glad your up and running now though.

Chris

sometimes you'll just get a crappy exit server and it will hang.. happens to me pretty frequently, and when it does, I just open the vidalia control panel and click the 'new identity' button to make it choose a new exit server..

I'll do it a few times with whatisimyip.org loaded up in the browser until I see that I get an exit server IP at MIT.EDU or something at least in the USA.. Then it's zoooomy fast goodness!

Good luck!

I put 4-5 hrs on putting it in my pc and configuring it. I was surprized by flactuating speed. Thanks doug for nice tip.

I agree, get the Tor button for Firefox and the Live IP addon as well. Instead of having to go to whatsmyip websites you can see your IP address displayed in the bottom-right hand side of Firefox. If it doesn't update right away, just right-click on it until it does ;)
