My site has been sitting at top of serps for a while now but I want to totally change the content on the homepage to increase conversions.

Is this a bad idea? Is it very risky? Any things I should consider before I do it?

As long as you aren't drastically changing the term frequency of your keywords you should still rank about the same. Take measurements of your match counts before and after and you should be OK. Updating pages to make them fresh usually helps rankings... but changing a page from being about apple pies to being about race cars is very bad. As long as you aren't changing the context and you keep the factor measures roughly the same it should be beneficial because of freshness.

Make a backup of your current pages for reference and you can always undo the change.
