The domain I want is taken for top three extensions .nxx, .oxx, .cxx (I still can't use those words here). There are lots of other extensions that are available...what do you guys think is the next best thing?

    None.

If all 3 are taken, you will lose out on conversions. People rarely remember anything beyond .net, .org and .com so return visitors = unlikely.

They don't rank well. @OP I suggest you add a prefix or suffix.

What country are you looking to target? If for example UK you can go for .co.uk.

True. I too have some domains with - and they're all ranking pretty well. OP, if none of those top extensions are available, i'd try to get keywordcxx.cxx

Nah. it kills me when the domain isn't even used. Just some squatter. I'm targetting english speakers, beyond that any country. But I suspect it would be mainly US.

Those 3 are not a must have. I can show you a .info emd that is ranked number 1 in a weight loss niche.

the .info is available. maybe i should just grab it.

What about if .net or .org is available. Which would you go for? I think .org implies non-profit.

Thought you said .net and .org was not available in your op.
http://www.buyviagra.org/ you think that's a non profit? I'm using .org for two local site right now.

How well you rank depends more on your on page and off page factors so don't sweat the domain name too much.

IMO it all depends what is your target. For example, if you are making MNS or similar, then go grab what is free and don't worry about it, since most people will probably come from SERPs or ads. On the other hand, I read many times that people check domain names, Twitter and Facebook accounts for availability, before deciding on projects name, since you want people to remember that name and when they do, they usually type name.com in address bar (on the other hand, many do actually just type name in Google search and follow the link in results). Think that you could apply that logic too.
