Is there a tool that shows what your ranking was originally?

Like to show this as a report to some clients as a "before and after" on their websites. So they can get an idea on how i improved their website and see the differences on how SEO has brought more traffic to their site.

    Does this exist?

    thx

You could maybe use Alexa to show an increase in traffic for a site over time (if you have no stats available such as Google analytics or from cpanel) - if the traffic would show up on their graph in the first place. Which, I guess that has nothing to do with ranking for a particular keyword, if that's what you're looking for.

Maybe? Possible to go to the Way back machine and enter in a URL of a particular Google search and see if it would bring back the result page from whatever time period you selected. I have never tried it however so I do not know.

It seems as though this may be something you want to do at the beginning of a campaign. Record search engine positions for some of the key words you are focusing on, any stats tracking program can show the increase in traffic over time.

I believe there are also a few free services that monitor your search engine results position for your selected keywords as well. You could just subscribe and save the daily/weekly (whatever it is) reports.
