    I am linking on various forums, and I am wondering if I should put my links down as http://www.mywebsite.com or http://mywebsite.com.

    Most of the forums I will be using allow multiple links, so would it make sense to use both, but with different keywords as anchors?

    The important thing is to pick one and set it in a htaccess so your not getting punished for double info on the same website ..

    Like www.domain.com/my-information-subject.htm and domain.com/my-information-subject.htm .. as above said pick one of the versions only ..

    Just add this in your .htaccess file..

    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.domain\.com [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*) http://www.domain.com/$1 [L,R=301]
    </IfModule>

    And place it in your domain root ..

    It can affect your SEO ranking if your not doing this. Better to be safe .. =)

    DO NOT USE both under any circumstances. The search engines see those two urls as two different webpages so what you're actually doing by creating backlinks for both of them is creating duplicate content. Which is a big no no.

    When you have a fresh new site you should choose one of the two formats. I for example choose www.mysite.com most of the times. I then set up a redirect from the http://mysite.com to www.mysite.com so that visitors always come to this page and the duplicate content does not become a problem.

    Other ways of doing it are from google webmasters tools ( choosing the preffered url) or using wordpress which has now an automatic redirect( you can choose the main url from the interface) you don't need to edit the .htacces anymore.

    If you already started backlinking for both of the urls what you can do is check on yahoo site explorer and see which of the urls, the www.mysite.com or http://mysite.com has more backlinks. Then the one that has the biggest number will become your main url. So set up a 301 redirect and start building links only to it from this point on. If there are any problems you can always go in google webmasters tools, set up the preffered url and remove any pages that give errors from the index.

    Good luck,

    Go for www.example.com
    Use htaccess to set 301 redirect the non-www version to www
