I had another journey thread written soon after I joined but it wouldn't post for some reason.

Since then my ideas have changed a little.

Last week I came up with the idea of starting a content business. I worked on a magazine for 7 years so have experience in writing but also commissioning articles, dealing with deadlines, editing, proofreading and all that. I have a friend of a friend running what appears to be a very successful content business. They outsource all their writing.

Then last weekend I felt overwhelmed but I realised that this is because I have given myself an unrealistic deadline.

Now I think that July 1st 2017 is a good target to aim for, on that date I want the following:

    1. Content Business to be up and running
    2. Website promoting my Kindle book finished.
    3. Possibly 1 or more Amazon affiliates set up and starting to age

My Kindle book is the reason I joined here. I believe there is good demand for it but I have done very little promotion, bar posting it to some Facebook groups. I 'think' I have found good url to promote it and I think I will extend this site as an Amazon affiliate site and sell other related Kindle/Physical books.

I really only started getting into this stuff around February 24th and sometimes I need to step back and realise that I have learned a ton in the last 5 weeks but it is only the beginning. Giving myself another 12 weeks or so seems like a good time frame. So for right now there is no pressure, just keep on reading, taking it all in and let all the ideas 'age' in my mind.

I do have a very clear, definitive long-term target however:

To be working remotely and earning €1500 p/m by the end of May 2018.

I am currently teaching English abroad and plan to move back to the motherland then, it would be great to be able to live where I want, possibly my hometown, and to be earning enough to work remotely full time.

I would need a bare minimum of €1500 a month to be doing this.

Slow and steady wins the race, no crazy get rich quick schemes, so long as I use my free time productively each day and am making progress I will be happy.

I know of a legit company that is looking for English teachers to teach via webinar / online which means you can work from home and do the hours you want. Off the top of my head it's paying $20 an hour, but if you're interested I can dig out the details for you.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply. Yes, I would be interested in that.

That is actually part of my plan B. I have occasionally taught via Skype and got paid via PayPal and need to do more research in that area. Teaching English is fine, I don't mind it really, but it is not scalable and there is no career progression.

That was one reason that I wrote the Kindle book in the hope I could get some type of passive income.

Even a mix of teaching/working online would be good. For instance, I was pretty happy going in to teach yesterday lunch time. Half the time all I'm doing is listening to someone as they talk about something interesting, it is very sociable after spending Friday afternoon to Monday lunchtime in my room staring at my laptop.

Leave it with me, I'll drop him a message on FB and hopefully get hold of him quickly. I live out in Spain, but this guy is in Thailand at the moment as I was hoping to try catch up with him next week if he was flying back West via the UAE.
If I've not got details to you by Sunday, give me a gently prod as I'm off to Dubai for 3 weeks next Monday and will be kicking back a bit.

Will do, thanks. I'm in Brazil at the moment, if I don't achieve my target of €1500 p/m remotely I think I could be off to Bilbao to start teaching in September 2018.

Is it teaching Chinese kids? Quite a few American college students are doing this. It's a good way to earn some money in your free time.

Piggybacking on this, there are also programs out there that let you grade tests online, like ETS. They may be bound to US hours though...

    Quick update.

I'm going to shelve plans for Amazon affiliate sites.

I need to play to my strengths. If I try and create an affiliate site I am competing aginst the entire world and I would be starting from scratch. There are probably millions of guys with a lot more skills and experience in this area and there is no guarantee of success.

Sure, you hear about the massive success stories but it may not happen. Also Amazon can just change the rules at any time and your business can take a hit.

So lots of reasons to leave it.

I need to play to my strengths.

I am a native English speaker with experience of working on a magazine. I know a lot about the writng process, commissioning articles etc. I will concentrate on starting a content business, but not right now, probably closer to the middle of May.

Over the past 3 weeks I have been writing content for my website which will help promote my Kindle book. It's a long process but I am bashing away at it, the content will probably be finished by Sunday April 30th, then I will get it translated and make sure the keywords are correct. My site will be in Portuguese as well as English.

It will probably be about 4000 words of very good content, at least, then I will also put the first 10% of my book on the site too as Amazon make it available for free on their site anyway. So this website will have at least maybe 7000 words of good content when it is ready.

I hope that will get me ranking and get plenty of traffic which I hope to convert to Kindle book sales.

The other thing is I am publishing a crime fiction book on behalf of my friend on Kindle. He is in his mid-60s, so is not very computer literate. Amazon take 30%, we get 70%. Of that 70% he gets 80% and I get 20%.

I got his book tidied up on and formatted for Kindle on fiverr, he paid for it. And now I'm doing a final proofread myself. Again from the magazine I have experience in proofreading so it isn't a completely foreign idea for me.

I will earn €0.50c per copy, so I will be doing all the promotion I can on that for him too. It might not earn much but again it's a another small income stream and it will be interesting to see what happens and learn about promoting fiction on Kindle.

Also, thankfully, the book is pretty good. He is a good writer.

Got my friend's Kindle book uploaded last night and it is on sale today. Nice to get it done on the 1st of the month seeing as Amazon works per calendar month.

I ended up spending quite a bit of time on it. I proofread it twice. Caught some typos but mainly it was punctuation and keeping the punctuation and formatting consistent the whole way through.

Very relieved and proud to have crossed one thing off my list. It was probably the least important thing but it is done and I will be earning €0.50c per sale from now until the Earth is catapulted into the Sun.

I hope to have my own site to help promote my own Kindle book up and running properly and purring away by June 1st and then have my content business underway by July 1st.

That should all be doable. As I say I feel good having knuckled down and got that Kindle book done.

I'm into a decent routine now. My friend's Kindle book uploaded late Sunday as above. Chilled out Monday for May 1st holiday. Then spent Tuesday to Friday 2pm solely working on/in my regular job. Got a lot done was proud of myself, also took a complete mental break from IM.

Then from 2pm Friday to now, I have pottered about on my website for my own Kindle book. I'm not a web design expert by any means. Sometimes I think it looks OK, then other times I think it is absolutely dreadful. Hopefully it is fit for purpose.

I have it pretty much laid out now all that has to go in is the content and change some images, I've bought some on 123rf.com.

I did some work on Keywordrevealer today, I'm a newbie at this but I tweaked my content a bit to get some keywords into it.

In total I have about 3500 words of content to go on. It was a bit of a head fuck to write but it's done. I will get it sent to someone to translate into Portuguese tomorrow, could be a week before I get it back but no rush.

I'll go back to my regular job of teaching at 5:15pm tomorrow and once again I will concentrate solely on that until Friday at 2pm where I will go back to IM.

I sold 10 Kindle books in 7 days last week, have no idea where those sales came from, very random. If this website could lead to an average of 3 sales a day I would be very happy. That would be earning me about US$500 a month.

I have another bunch of ideas for content, maybe 5/6 little ideas, so maybe in another 2 or 3 weeks I could have another 2000/3000 words of quality content online.

And just keeping lashing on the quality free content and hope it converts to sales of my book.

Then I will look into setting up my content business.

I should get back my translated content any day now.

But I have again slightly tweaked my strategy.

I did nothing this weekend and I think the reason why is that I need something else to work on. So I did my 9-5 job teaching, then there was no fucking way I was writing content about teaching at the weekend and then I was sick of reading about SEO/website stuff.

So I have decided to write another Kindle book.

I saw a video of writer Christopher Hitchins recently about writing and he summed up my experience as well. It is that "people who write don't want to write, they have to write" and this is how I feel about this Kindle book. It will be cathartic or therapeutic for me to write, I feel I need to write it.

It is non-fiction and it is all pretty much in my head. I just need to get it down on paper. From this website I discovered that there is a dictation feature on Word 2010 for Mac, I never knew this before. I used to like the physical act of writng with a lovely pen, I still do, but I absolutely hate typing. So to 'write' this book all I'm doing now is jabbering away to myself in my room with the dictation feature doing all the writing. I have 5500 words written already and it feels like I have written zero.

I honestly think I could have the book 'written' in about 2 weeks. However then it will be a few months of editing, and shaping it and correcting it. Right now there isn't punctuation, it is almost one long sentence. But that whole 'vomiting' of a first draft is completely painless due to the dictation fucntion. It is a game changer for me.

    So my masterplan is:

    1. Teach 9-5 Mond-Fri
    2. Write content related to teaching to promote my Kindle book, and get it translated into Portuguese and onto my website
    3. Write my non-fiction kindle book
    4. Continue reading and learning here, SEO, social media, affiliates etc.

I have now postponed my content business until Jan 2017. This will be more like a 'real job' where I will need to sit at my laptop and get certain tasks done for a certain time as there will be deadlines. I can't do it as I feel like it and earn money passively.

But I think I will concentrate on the 4 points above for the rest of 2017. They are certainly more fun and interesting than the content business and I will see how much money I am earning passively in December. Then I might have to start producing content to get some regular money coming in.

But I may start getting into making money on social media as people do here, I find all that very interesting but I know absolutely zero about it right now. I bought a UDEMY course on social media marketing for €20 so will do that. Again I hope that by December 31st I will know quite a bit.

And plus if I have 4 things to work on I can jump between all 4 and shouldn't get bored and will always be working on something rather than wasting time like I did last weekend.

Also the football season in Europe is finishing now, that should make me get a lot more work done at the weekend from now until August 12th, 13 weeks away.

Got back my Portuguese content and have pretty much finished Shree's affiliate course. It's opened up a rabbit hole that I think my website may not be very well designed. It is essentially just a blog but I won't rush it. So I think I might spend more time looking into website design, especially the theme plugin he recommends.

I've also started into the Udemy social media course, learning a lot there. I think it is well worth buying these €10-€20 Udemy courses when you are a beginner in a lot of areas like me.

I thought I would get the Portuguese content uplaoded this weekend, but I think it wil probaby take another couple of weeks.

    So:
    -more webdesign research,
    -more SEO stuff form Shree
-got a free advanced SEO course on udemy
-social media udemy course and setup
    -finish extra port content

If I get sick of the above, work on my new Kindle book.

My next important milestone will be June 24th as it will be 4 months since I started looking into this IM stuff properly.

If you need help translating from English to Portuguese hit me up (I'm a Portuguese Native).
In any case, good luck on your journey!
I'm also aiming to become a digital nomad/have the freedom to live and work from wherever I desire so I'll definitely keep following.

    Hi Coepi.

Thanks for the offer! I should be ok though, have plenty of native Portuguese speakers that can help me out.

Do you have a journey thread?

Ya, working remotely is certainly the dream. And I think the sensible way to do that is to learn and build up slowly over time. Give yourself a realistic timeframe, I have about another 12 months or so.

I bought the Gramous book on IG marketing today. It's written by a blackhatter and has good reviews. As I said above I think it is a good idea to buy books or do courses when you are a complete newbie in an area.

I know nothing about IG but who knows 6 months from now it could be yet another source of income. Having lots of small income streams is a great positive for IM.

    Good luck in your journey.

    Thanks David.

I've done about 95% of Shree's excellent Amazon Affiliate course. I had built a basic Wordpress site before, following Tyler Moores free tutorials on YouTube but again I found out tons of information from Shree's videos, in particular lots of excellent plugins, especially ones to speed up your site.

I have a lot of free time between now and Monday lunch time, so I signed up for the Thrive Content for 1 year. Again it was recommended in Shree's course and if he says it is good then I will believe him. I have searched for it on the forums here and it seems a lot of people use it.

I have looked at some vids about it, the intro video they use to sell it on their site mainly and it does look cool.

I'm pretty damn excited right now. I hope that by Monday lunch time I will redesign my website and get my Portuguese content up.

Then hopefully some people might start finding it organically before I start publicising it more widely.

I am not going to start promoting it widely right away myself because:

    1. I have more ideas for content that I need to finish off and then send to my friend to correct my Portuguese.
    2. Learn more abut Social Media marketing. I know a little but not much.

So maybe in about 3 weeks I will be ready to start promoting it a lot more.

Which of course I hope will lead to more sales of my Kindle book on Amazon.

Which is the whole frigging point of the exercise. :)

The excitement level is still there, I decided to take Sunday off and really I was a bit bored, while the excitement is there I should use it. For me the Thrive Theme Content Builder is a game changer, it makes designing pages enjoyable. I honestly never thought I'd ever say that.

It doesn't work for posts. My plan was to have roughly half my content on pages and half in a blog, but I might do the whole lot in pages as it can look so much better using Thrive.

My blog will only be updated when I have some good content. Could be once or maybe twice a month, but the content of my site really will be excellent AAA-rated content, that I hope will go viral-ish it will be so useful. Which will all lead to my book and hopefully more $$$.

So pages might work as I won't be posting that often to it.

I have no idea when it will be ready could be another week at least. The closer I get to finishing it the longer it seems to take.

But it's great to be waking up and feeling excited about something.

Also bought some Keywords from on here related to my site so will see how that goes. A good price and should be a time/money saver for me.

I'm on holidays this week. My website is pretty much finished, just getting one more person to proofread the Portuguese content but I still have to get all my social media up and running. But I think I might just take a break from the whole IM thing because I am on holiday.

However I won't be stopping completely, instead I'm focusing on my 2nd Kindle Book, a non-fiction one. I think I will work on it for the rest of my holiday and probably next week as well. Then I will probably be sick of it so go back to my websites.

I'm pretty confident it will sell and yesterday I was trying to think of a deadline to work towards, I think December 1st sounds about right.

I also had an idea of turning my current Kindle book into a udemy course, it's just something to think about.

I have accepted I might not make any money from IM for many months, and that's fine. All that really matters is my target in the post title, to be earning €1500 in May next year [€1000 would be absolute minimum] and I'm confident I will do that. It's just that things like Kindle books, Udemy courses etc take time, but 12 months is plenty of time.

My motivation is still extremely high, yes being able to work remotely in my hometown is a motivator but honestly right now what motivates me every day is me telling myself "this is the last fucking time in my life I'm sharing an apartment". :)

As Roger Murtagh says "I'm too old for this shit".
