I have never used tags across any of my sites for the past 3 years due to the impression of causing on-page duplicate content.

Well today has been a long day for me, i spent a whole damn day spying on most of my competitors and i noticed that almost all of them use quite an amount of tags on their most of their pages. They outperform my main site btw.

Also did a small research and notice almost all huge authority sites use quite an amount of tags on every single posts.

So what do you think guys? what is real experience with this?

Check if your competitors are no-indexing the tag pages. It may be best to do that if you think those pages will be useful to your surfers but likely to be duplicate content.

I've always heard to do the following:

Add them for LSI's but nofollow them, they aren't for ranking they're there for increasing LSI keyword density

Nope, none of them are no-index, i spent another 8 hours researching on how big sites use tags and i am quite certain it doesn't cause any duplicate content, fuck me.

I always no-index tag and category pages, although for both tags and categories, you can write an article for each tag and category that'll appear before the list of posts.

I always no-index the tags and only use the category pages. However, I am testing the tags on a new site and it looks like its going fine so far.

I feel like my websites are optimized enough not to need tags. I use categories, similar posts widget.. I wouldn`t want to overdo it with tags, but that`s just me..

IMO you would not need tags if your website is doing well on its own. However, you say that the competitors are beating yours out of the water, give it a shot. No index it. Give it some time, it'll happen.
