    Hey guys,

Just have a quick question for those of you who have employed va's before.

Last week was the first week she was working for me. All was good and she was working part time and getting everything that I needed done. I payed her her cut for the week, and then she asked that if next week (this current week) she could start working full time. I said yes and gave her even more tasks to do, knowing that these tasks should keep her busy for about 6-7 hours.

But this morning I wake up and get the message "I am sorry I wasn't able to get to the articles, I'm sick and waiting for my meds to kick in. I will get to it tomorrow I promise."

So really, she did zero work on her Tuesday because she was quote on quote sick. And on Monday, she still didn't get everything done that I was asking. And I can assure you, if she wants to work "full-time" like she said,
then 8 hours a day should be WAY more than enough to get everything done.

I told her that's fine, but now am I expected to pay her for days that she didn't get done what was expected? So far for this week, I feel as thought she only deserves about a 4th of what I'm supposed to pay her...

What is your experience with this?

I don't know what agreement was made but you should only be paying her for work completed.

I'm paying her XX weekly for her to do the tasks I assign her 5 days a week. But your right, I told her that I cannot pay her for the days in which she doesn't get things done. Simple as that. Probably didn't even need to create a thread, but I was just hoping someone else who had been in this same situation might chime in.

As long as no contracts were signed, and it is "freelance" work, and she declares her own taxes, then you have no obligation to pay her "sick/holiday pay".

I never made a strict agreement with regards to sick days... But now I know for the next VA I hire! I ended up just telling her I can't pay her for days that she doesn't work, and she was totally fine with it.

But now because I am slightly Jewish, I have one more question.

I am paying her 12 dollars a day to do the following:

    Rewrite a 1500- 2000 word article
    Write a 1500 word kid's story

But the rewrite and the story are of decent - good quality. They of course need a little work, but not a whole bunch, and I feel that as time goes on, they will need less and less work.

Obviously I'm not completely overpaying her, but is $12 a day a little to much to be paying for the work? Or should I perhaps be paying her a bit more...?

    Thanks for your replies.

Ha! Well you may or may not be right... My website is directed towards female mothers, so hiring a female mother seemed like a great idea.

well i am sure this is your first time of hiring a VA, after one or two you will get some experience and will settle everything before hiring like a agreement.

just pay her for now and discuss this issue with her, make a agreement if you are hiring her full time.

the price is right, i am not feminist or something, but i think you should pay females little extra, as long as you keep them happy you will get the work done.

As far as I'm aware when your VA is "sick", it's time to move on and search for another.

You should do what you feel is right, I wouldn't recommend paying, unless the work has been done.

    Edit: $12 is nothing... :|

Two figures a week is chump change. Do you want to keep her or not. If not, go ahead and be "fair". You sound too suspicious, which makes me think you are a little whacky. Maybe she'll be better of without you. If this were $400+ per week, we could break-out the razor and divide this thing with precision, but at $XX it's not about the money, it's about <whatever else>.

I hate this stupid fucking show "American Pickers". Couple of faggot retards, drive around and supposedly "pick" up antiques etc... to sell at retail. Supposedly they are professionalis. I think the fuck not.

They fuck around negotiating for an item. Seller wants $15. Picker offers $10.00. They back and forth for a while, and after a while supposedly professional "picker" gets the Seller down to $12.50. OOooo! What a PROFESSIONAL!!! My fucking ass.

A little while later, Picker wants an item. Seller wants $1500. Picker offers $1000. Seller is pissed because he feels like he got fucked over the $2.50 from the last deal, so $1,250 is a no-go. Says Picker can go fuck himself.

Some professional. Stupid fuck pissed the guy off over chump change, and now he's going to lose an item as a result, or wind-up paying an extra $250. Stupid fuck. Worse, they show this on TV as if that's how pros negotiate. Pros don't fuck around with $2.50 when $250 is at stake. They give the $2.50, create some "good feeling" and win when the negotiations really matter.

Are you feeling my vibe here, OP?

    Story #2.

I know this guy. Professional house flipper. Knows how to make a buck. Penny-pincher, to the extreme. Walks in the door one day with a cheap, carnival black, skull & crossbones flag. I express interest. "Do you want it?" Yes, I do. "I'll sell it to you for $4.00." I pay the $4.00, and laugh my ass off at this penny-pinching idiot.

2 days later, his computer dies. He asks me if I can take a look at it. After about 10 minutes, I conclude it's the Power Supply. He asks me if I can fix it, and if so how much.

Option A: I like this guy. He's my friend. I have a used, working power supply in my closet. I can trade it for the old one in about 15 minutes, and under any other circumstances I would do it for free, and give him the old, used PSU for free.

Option B: I remember the $4.00 for the cheap, stupid pirate flag. He wants to be wealthy. He thinks wealth is created by nickels and dimes. Wealth is created by knowing what is important to fuck with, and what is not, and this guy needs a lesson. $40.00 for labor, plus $30.00 for the used PSU.

I give him option "B". He says he wants to think about it. He goes without a computer for 2 days. Calls me on day 2, and says "Go ahead and fix the computer." I have it fixed in 15 minutes, and later that evening he pays me my $70.00. I hear from a mutual friend that he spent days 1 & 2 calling around getting prices for replacing a bad PSU, labor and parts, and when he found out that the going rate was what I charged and higher, he decided to have me do the work.

He thinks he's a smart shopper, because he called around and got various quotes before hiring me to do the work. He still thinks he's smart. I haven't told him this:

Stupid fuck. Have you forgotten all the free shit I've done for you over the last year? All those times when something went wrong and instead of paying someone else, I did it for you for free, as a favor? And now you want to charge me $4.00 for this stupid fucking flag that you found in the garbage can at the foreclosed house you just bought? If you add up all the free stuff I've done for you over the last year, it adds up to well over $1,000 worth of work that I was glad to do as a friend, and as a favor. But now, we're doing "business", huh? Well, here's some business right back at you.

    1) All the free work stops immediately.
    2) Everything from this point gets billed at market price.
    3) Starting with the PSU replacement of your computer.

So, OP. I get a sense about you. I think you might be like this guy. So obsessed with the pennies and the nickels that you fail completely to see the dollars and the Benjamins. Should you pay a whopping $XX to your VA? It's a stupid question. Actually it's a statement about you. You ought to know the answer to it, and the fact that you don't tells me you are confused about who you are.

So who are you, OP? A penny-pincher that never finds out about all the large opportunities that you've lost because you were too focused on the pennies and didn't pay any attention at all to what is truly valuable?

Nigel, with that pirate mouth of yours, it's no wonder your friend managed to sell you his flag.

But setting aside the obsenisties (which I personally don't find offensive or over-the-top)I want to thank you. Your post has actually made more sense than anything I have ever read on BHW. You're right, I have been so worried about saving the nickels and pennies that I am putting at risk a very good VA... and that itself is putting me at risk of never achieving the "Benjamins", that I so strongly desire.

Should I pay $XX to my VA? Absofuckinglutely. Funny how your post could make me change my mind so swiftly.

I'm going to get you back one day, you will see.

Folks I craft this stuff with intent. The "obscenity" etc... is for style. Entertainment value. You are supposed to see the rough language, note the care and deliberation that went into the construction of the post and find the diamond in the rough. It's not SUPPOSED to be for the idiots to figure out. I LIKE the fact that they stand around twirling their dicks around, absolutely certain that they've got this obscene scoundrel identified and are are busy attempting to "out" this wretched excuse for a human being, because as long as attention is being paid to HIM, you don't notice the hoards of retards running our government into 18 trillion dollars worth of debt on the promise of "free" anything.

You are supposed to look at him, look at me, and make a choice. Who are you more like? Who do you more agree with? Who is more interesting, has more to offer, thinks more, says more, does more, knows more, provokes more and gets more going, and who is the inert blob that spends his life endlessly repeating the mass-media force-fed electronic "values" and advocates that those that fail to obey his retarded perceptions must be done away with. One of us is John Galt, and the other is dependent upon him for his very survival, and yet presumes to enslave his superior to further his own superficial and inferior objectives.

There's nothing personal here. These are archetypes, and I put them on display for your consideration. Pick one, and then be that with full awareness of who and what you are.

OP you are a class act, and are one of the few here that instinctively, immediately "get it". I'm pleased to have made your acquaintance, and hope that I may have been of some value.
