That is the question! So my curiosity is about competition.

What do you guys see as acceptable competition (go into a niche) vs. unacceptable competition (avoid the niche)?

For instance, I see one guy in position 7 on the first page who has a few thousand backlinks. He's SEO optimized for the keyword. He's got all the bells an whistles as far as web design and backlinks/SEO. Yet, there's only 1 of him doing this on the first page.

But if this guy has all that and is only rank 7, is it really worth my time?

In other examples, if you see on the first page 2 people clearly trying to target this keyword, maybe in some cases, they even have EMD, would this scare you away? What if their backlinks are low, doesn't it still meant that they're trying to build lots of backlinks regardless?

Would you only go into a niche where the keyword is clearly not being targeted?

    -A friendly newb :)

On page SEO, has about a 1% effect on rankings when it's a competitive word.
You have to look at the links and quality of the links.

Dude, it depends on if you really like that niche. If you do, then go for it. If it is whatever then think about it. The more you think about it, then less likely you are to go in. I usually just say fuck it and dive in. It seems to be a pretty solid strategy haha.

The problem is that I've jumped into a niche before and am now finding it difficult to rank it.

As I look at other niches, I don't want to make the same mistake...

Ya, I was kinda joking as I do not think that is the best way. I think I have been lucky. But, sometimes you do not know if you couldn't rank it if maybe you gave up too soon.
