    Hi BHW,

I have a decision to make and not an easy one. I have a web site for an affiliate network I setup. The network isn't doing so good (because it needs staff that funding never went through to pay for). The site is beautiful and it has a blog. The blog has many people signing up each day (wordpress). The domain name is awesome as well for affiliate marketing. Rather than let the site sit as an affiliate network I think it would be prudent to turn the main site into either the blog or a forum. A forum is obviously more work. Of course if I'm writing content for a blog I could just as easily make forum posts rather than blog posts. My fear in doing that is that a forum might fail whereas the blog's userbase is already in a constant expanse. Then there's the possibility of having a blog and a forum on the same site. I know vbulletin has both a blogging and forum script in one.

    Any thoughts?

Both can be profitable...or not. It depends on what you are willing to put into the site. How about create a free membership site using wordpress and have a paid option for a private forum. Best of both worlds...

I would say creating a nice blog would be the way to go. When you setup your blog to be Adsense Ready and create posts and drive certain traffic and have the Adsense ads to target the traffic the same then you should develop a nice little blog that will generate you income. I would say you should setup an Auto Blogging plugin if you are able to do so, this makes things easier and allows you to post more content and rank for more search terms.

I would stick with blog. First the forum is very hard to maintain as the user base grows where blog is relatively easier to handle.

And as you already have a base with blog, I would say sticking with blog will be good enough.

What do you guys think about that idea? Let's say you guys are a subscriber of my free blog and as a programmer I'm offering custom made marketing software you get access to as a paid forum member. Would you guys pay for access to that? Also, what do you think a fair monthly price would be if I'm offering profitable software that I think up and also whip up softwares that my members suggest/request? $29/mo? $99/mo? Correct me if I'm wrong but a forum like that where I'm coding for my members should demand a price at least $50 or above right? Would you guys pay for a service like that?

A forum is extremely tough to get going. You need a lot of dedicated members and your forum runs itself only when you reach a certain critical mass. The beginning of a forum needs dedicated time from the founders for several months at a stretch at the very least, and often you will find that your forum lacks organic traction even after months of hard work. If you have to choose between the two, I strongly recommend you turn it into a blog.

I'm 100% going to keep the blog on there, probably as the main lander. What about my paid forum/custom coded marketing software idea though? That way the forum part of things doesn't rely on just useful reading content, it's a way to gain access and support to/for software I create at my users' requests. And if you think that's a good idea, how about a fair price point?
