I know this topic has been discussed many many times however, I find so many different suggestions and stories online it's hard to know what to believe.

Three Domain Questions, I'm hoping to find answers from SEO guys/gals who have tested these in the past@

    1) Is it worth buying domains with hyphens?

    example:

    www.domain-name.com

Would it be hard to get on page 1 of Google because of the Hyphen? if two sites were exactly the same strength of content, pages, backlinks etc who would rank higher?

    DomainName.com or Domain-Name.com

    2) TLD Extensions, when searching for most Keyword Domains, they are usually gone, however I often see .org.uk domains and my sites are UK based, is it worth buying .org.uk domains I've heard many arguements that these are fine to rank and others say they are much much hard to rank on page one of Google. Is .org.uk a sub-domain of .org?

    3) If you were looking to buy a domain name to focus at sites in the UK which would be your top 5 TLD Extension choices in order of preference. My list is below let me know if you think this is good.

    -1).com
    -2).co.uk
    -3).org
    -4).net
    -5).org.uk

Thanks looking forward to reading your thoughts and finally working out what's best.

    Hi mate.

Im also from the UK. Im not too sure with the hyphens, but im currently trying to rank a .org.uk domain. Only been a couple of weeks, so not sure how well it will do yet. Another new UK domain name ive seen is .gb.net

I was tempted to buy a few today as they are currently only £1.99 on a promo, but wasn't sure if they would rank well. I suppose you have to test them to find out :)

Anyway, my top 5 TLD extensions for the UK are :

    1) .co.uk
    2) .com
    3) .net
    4) .org
    5) .org.uk

Sorry for the short input but from my experience ranking TLDs is the same as ccTLDs, so if .co.uk is already registered you can go for .com/.net/.org. Just make sure you set the country target in WMT. But if you're a business, $10-$20 isn't a significant amount and it's wise to register the ccTLDs too so you don't miss out traffic from those type-ins.

I was more curious than anything about what others thought on this subject

I've managed to rank a double hyphen domain with .org.uk extention on page 1 after just over 1 month. I wont say the domain name but can show you how it's laid out.

    Example:

    www.name-name-name.org.uk

I'm still curious to know whether
www.namenamename.org.uk would rank higher and if www.namenamename.co.uk or .com would rank higher, I cant test as these domains are gone.

The keyword I'm ranking for has for the [Exact Term] 1,300 Local Monthly Searches with a High competition according to Google Keyword Tool.

I guess the only real way for me to know the answer would be to buy .co.uk, com, net, org, .org.uk create the same amount of backlinks and similar content then see what happens....
