At some point, I want to tackle a few keywords in high competition niches. However, I know I'd have to ramp up my SEO skills, and I understand the site wouldn't rank number one in 90 days, more like 6 months to a year.

I'm prepared for that, so if anyone has any tips they'd like to share for how they rank sites for high competition niches, including how long it takes, I'm all ears! :D

when you want to rank for high competitive kws the best thing you can do for a fact is to actually analyze the competition, and discover why they are ranking high for that kw, and exploit these methods to your advantage out ranking them with they're own weapons :p

normally it's take 6 month to 1 year..

do link wheel at least (12 spoke 1st layer , 24 spokes for 2nd layer) , directory submission, bookmarking to death , blog comment, rss submission, .edu & .gov backlink as many as u can..

for on page seo - h1 , h2 , meta keyword , meta description , alt image tag , footer link , underline keyword , BOLD keyword, italic , color wording for keyword..

    lastly , pray !!

    ok good luck mate..

I think you can do it if don't give up.

But if the keyword is hard to rank you need some good investment for out source backlinking.

I recommend to make backlinks each week and upload your site with new content each 3 days minimum. After some time (6 month - 1 year) buy HIGH ACTUAL PAGREANK BACKLINKS from pagerank 3 to 7.

Just buy as many scrapebox lists as you can and directly blast the site with one anchor text and see what happens.

Do it for about 6 months and you should rank #1 with over 1000 million backlinks.

    Good luck.

Seriously you need at least 5 different methods to exploit high PR ******** backlinks that aren't spammed to death. Then you need to keep building and building links. It can be done.

You also need diversity if it's that competitive (our definitions may vary)
    -Bookmarks 3 times a week
    -Blog comments
    -Forum thread links
    -Articles
    -Web 2.0s
    -Profile links (angela/paul style)
    -Software directories
-Upload stuff to torrent sites for backlinks
    -edu/gov links
    -RSS submissions
-Submit content to your competitors to get contextual links on their pages
    -Private blog networks
-Lots of social media likes/votes/tweets etc
-Major indexing of every link in there you build
-Press releases that actually get picked up on news sites
    -Paid homepage backlinks

When you go after it though, just be sure the keyword isn't a "freebie" keyword from experience. I rank for two really, really tough keywords that no mortal should try and the first one I ever ranked with just doesn't make money. I wish I had known more about buyer intent and keyword profitability before I started. It's just freebie seekers and I've only been able to profit from it by selling adspace on the number of visitors. On the other hand, the other one is very lucrative since I now have figured out more.

Test first with PPC to see if it's even worth your time. Otherwise Google will drive you crazy for a year and the rewards will be like a kick in the nuts.

Thanks for the good responses! I pretty much figured I'd really have to diversify the type of links pointing to the site, in comparison to low to mid-competition niches that don't require as many diverse links.

I learned something new about the on-page aspects dunhill mentioned, I'll keep those filed away.

Any more plausible and useful tips?
