Some of you may already do this, but its something I've just discovered that helps me track and understand my competitors.

I use SerpBook to track my keywords, but I never understood the fluctuations in my ranks, so I made a SerpBook category for my target keyword, and put the top 20 competing URLS in for the same keyword. This way I can see who is rising and who is falling and how it affects me.

So now I can see which of my competitors are doign what. If I see a website going up sharply, I will then analyse it using hrefs, MajesticSEO or Moz, and I can see what they are doing in order to out rank me. This way I can counteract it within days or even hours.

I've been using this method for a little while and its really helped keep those top ranks for longer!

If you are having problems with a clients keyword or a competitive keyword like the one in the image above, give this method ago and get a deeper insight into exactly what you need to be doing. (lol this is the sort of thing that a WSO is written about).

    Thanks ;)

I get that a lot of people on these forums have a very basic knowledge of SEO...but really, this stuff should be painfully obvious (watching competitors rankings and keeping an eye on them with hrefs should be a baseline for anybody interested in maintaining their rankings).

Hopefully people will read what you've put though instead of asking what niche you do this in!
    :)

It is basic, but often overlooked. I didn't do it for ages, mainly due to cost of SerpBook. If I monitored every targeted keyword I'd be the biggest package on Serpbook lol. Its a good idea just to target a few problem keywords rather than everything.

A lot seems to get overlooked on these forums lol.

Agree on the problem keywords - if you don't know why they've stopped working, you're not in a good position to deliver promises to clients.
