If you keep your money in a safe, always, ALWAYS put it in a plastic bag. If you don't, not only will it ruin your money but any other documents you have in there such as passports, birth certificates and social security cards.

And yes, I learned this the hard way. Luckily, I caught it early enough though.

Money has alot of moisture inside of it, almost like a sponge. When you put the money inside of a safe (A good, SEALED safe), the water evaporates and since it has nowhere to go because it's in a sealed safe, it attaches itself to other things that can absorb moisture such as passports, ID's, or really anything made out of paper. Paper is actually pretty effecient at holding water.

Anyways, ya. Lesson learned. Plastic bag.
