I am just curious how long it is taking people to rank now. I know that you can rank quick but they don't usually stay that way. I am ranking sites around 4 to 6 months and they seem to be sticking. Is this the average or could I be going faster at link building?

I'd also like to know this. I'm a noob to SEO (I mean I know a lot about it, but I'm a noob at practising it). I've never ranked a site at number 1 yet and am working on getting my first website ranked for my primary keyword. 1 month in and I was at #46. 2 weeks later (now) I'm nowhere on Googles rankings ha ha. I'm not sandboxed/ de-indexed, but just not totally out of the rankings for my main keyword.

it really depends on so many factors. For instance, what is your definition of "medium" competition? I mean, medium competition would be a 2 letter long-tail of "porn" or "weight-loss".

Keywords in general really depend on your ability to do on-page seo and the saturation of the specific keyword. Some keywords have little competition, but have major players in top positions, while on the other hand I have seen highly saturated keywords with fish at the top.

Depends upon kw competition but 4-6 months are too long. You need higher PR and niche relevant links to rank faster.

Of course it does. Lets get past the newbie answers and not go into all the onpage etc and everybody talk about what time it has been taking them to rank for keywords. I thought the rule of thumb for a medium keyword was around 40k hits per month but for people that haven't heard of that before that is what I mean. :) Thanks for everyones reply. I was just curious on others time frame.

    Different approaches different time frames.

You could go with a medium risky linkbuilding tactic and reach page 1 for 10k-15k search terms in like 3 months. Anyway this gives the wrong picture. Different from niche to niche :p

Depends on how you mitigate your risk, competitors, and your niche plus if you are seoing for short term this is way different than long term. Just what I've seen watching the serps..

I agree with makemecash's post. Run the top 10 on G of your keywords through ahrefs, and keyword saturation seems to work rather too well at the moment, imo.
