Well ... some guys once told me that I should never do tier 2, because after they did tier 2, they rankings dropped like hell. What's the truth here ... ?

I'm still trying to increase my rankings for some niches I have in the page 2 of google, and I didn't do tier 2 yet for them. That's why I'm asking this.

    Much appreciated, thanks!

those guys probably didn't know "good backlinking"
if you already had backlinks from high pr link (like sitewide / actual page) or high pr blog post maybe from cnn etc, you do not need tier 2 again. but it's different if the links from web 2.0 properties, social bookmarks, high pr profiles.

the key of tier 2 : do not use scrapebox / xrumer blast (only tier 3) and make dripfeed them.

Truth is whoever told you that, has not got a clue what he is talking about. Happens a lot in SEO, people saying this or that is bad because their site happened to drop, when the drop more than likely had nothing to do with the second tier.

Completely agree. On any given day, one of 100 things could have affected SERPS. Google decided to scan your page again and found a Panda penalty. New algorithm released that penalizes public guest posting. Etc.

Don't trust anyone's SEO advice unless you know they're a diehard tester with a suite of testcase sites and network test sites, that knows how to make isolated tests.

You are just wasting your time treating it like Tier 1.
Just blast the hell out of Tier 2 with GSA using spinned content and you will be fine.

If your tier 2 links are crappy they will pass bad juice to your money site and bring it down in the SERP's.So whether you use SB/xrumer anything, try it with quality backlinks only. You would be better off just buying quality links from related sites with pagerank.

You need to do Tier 2, that depends on the competition. Try to post quality contents in Tier 2, you don't require to maintain a great quality though it should be readable. It is mandatory to have high quality unique contents for your Tier 1 links.
