Fair warning: This is a rant. I'm not whining or asking for money. I just need to bitch. OK, and maybe whine too

Ye gods, what a season. I'm in upstate New York and this snow has crushed my shit. We've had umpteen power outages and a month ago a massive power surge fried my stuff! Dishwasher, washing machine, stove, 2 satellite phone systems (6 handsets total), printers, monitors, and on and on. We had surge protectors but it just ripped through them. Anything on those white strip protectors is toast. Those things are crap.

But Belkin is my new BFF! All ny Belkin SurgeMasters took the hit and died, but protected whatever was attached. They cost over $50 each but man do they do the job. Anything on a surge protector that cost less than $50 is gone. Luckily all my CPUs made it. Just the components on secondary lines (and crappy protectors) died.

The day it happened we lost power in half of the house so I went to flip the circuit breakers and a huge POW and sparks flew over my head. Took 3 electricians 2 days to trace and repair the fried wires. The room attached to the sparking join box is just cut off now. It would cost the earth to re-wire that. It smelled like my house was on fire but turns out the smell was just my melted surge protectors.

The control panel IC board from the dishwasher has a capacitor that looks like someone fired a tiny canon through it. I have an outlet that looks like it was blown with plastique. The surge protectors (8!) still smell like a house fire a month later.

My insurance company blames the electric company, the electric company tells us to talk to the insurance co. I have a beautiful Maytag washing machine with a touchscreen and all the bells and it's a doorstop now. Going to the laundromat is killing me, it's been hundreds of dollars. Fucking $5 to wash one load! Dryers are $3 for 30 mins. It'll cost $500 to repair the washing machine, $500 for the stove, probably $300 for surge protectors. It'll be maybe $6K to make us whole.

Gone is my favorite printer of my life: a BEAUTIFUL HP 1120C that could do 11 x 17. A million years old but what a workhorse. 2 LaserJets. An OfficeJet all in one. I need to send shit to people and I don't even have a fax at home anymore. LCD monitors! A six-burner Thermidor professional dual-fuel range is toast. The oven can't hold any temp under 500 and 3 burners won't ignite. Fried components everywhere. Boo hoo

I've been offline for weeks but now I'm back. I'm pissed off. I'm going to put up a blog with my pics and my correspondence with the power company (Central Hudson). I'm going to tell the local newspaper and file a complaint with the public service commission. I have the blackened fried stuff and there WILL be a wall of shame with pics.

I was corresponding with some folks here and I just vanished. I want everyone to know I didn't bail. I've just been dealing with a shitload of crap.

Oh, and my chicken pen collapsed in latest the storm last week. It's fucking rubble. The birds are all OK but I can't even get in to figure out what to do until the ice and snow melt. Just fucking perfect. I need to replace half the shit in my house AND rebuild a 40 foot enclosure.

    OK, done

I wasn't too sympathetic until the chicken coop. I mean WTF!

Seriously, I would stay on the insurance company and if they feel like it is the electric company's fault, they can sue them for it.

If the insurance company plays up you should let us all know on here. Make a blog giving them some bad PR and we can all assist by providing a backlink or two with their name as the anchor :)

    Hey All

Thanks for the well wishes etc! Insurance Co is stepping up. Not 100% but maybe 70 so better than nothing. Got the washer replaced and a bunch of other stuff compensated for (at way low rates!@! but wth). I think a blog against the power co is still a good idea tho
