    Hey,

I received an interesting offer today.

Someone was trying to sell a link from a PR8 site for $600/3months.

The site indeed has PR8, but all the inner pages aren't even ranked.

And the alexa rank is a high 16361676, indicating little to no traffic (for a news paper site)

Clearly fake/invalid PR but i'd just like to understand how this might have happened?

    Update:
Upon doing some research. I forgot you can just buy high PR domains from sites like godaddy auction, namejet, dynadot or freshdrop.net

    Here are some examples

    PR8
    Code:
    http://www.namejet.com/Pages/Auctions/BackorderDetails.aspx?domainname=griffith.tv&timeleft=Mar.%2005,%202012

    PR7
    Code:
    http://www.namejet.com/Pages/Auctions/BackorderDetails.aspx?domainname=italcult.net&timeleft=Feb.%2027,%202012
    PR6
    Code:
    https://auctions.godaddy.com/trpItemListing.aspx?miid=65077761&isc=FreshDrop1

It's definitely fake. Most of its backlinks are nofollow. If things don't add up, then it's probably fake. Definitely find another site.

From where? Another high pr site? I'd expect at least a bit of a traffic spike then. Or a few inner pages being indexed.

That is one way to redirect but not how to fake PR. These guys redirect TO a high PR site. Not get a 301 from a high PR site. They just redir to someone like Google or Twitter and hammer the site for indexing. Once indexed it will typically get the PR from the site it's 301'd to on the PR update. Then they break the 301, toss a site on it and sell it to a dumbass. There are a flood of these after every major PR update. One happened a week or two ago so lots of scammers trying to cash in.

Not very hard after you know how to check for it. There are several ways..

    1) Common sense, For example: a newly registered shitty .info domain can't be a PR9
    2) Type info:Domain.com in google and if it shows different domain in search results, it is fake.
    3) Use one of the many tools on internet that check for fake or genuine PR.

There is always obvious indicators but to be safe you should always ask before you get screwed.
