This might be a stupid question, but I'm still going to ask it.

This might be a stupid question, but why do people blog, from a SEO perspective, as compared to just building a website. If you're going to add new information, and you would otherwise add it to a website, is it just a way that looks good to the search engines?

Not a stupid question. If you build a high quality blog and link it to your website it will improve your website's page rank in google. Just one of many strategies in your SEO arsenal.

It's whatever your preference is really. Most marketers use wordpress which has features built in like categories without any coding or plugins. For SEO in my niches I prefer static "page" sites. When I'm promoting via social sites, I send them to a blog because it's dated, seems fresh/new etc.

So after all that being said it's preference.

This depends on purpose and industry. You may want to sell your clients on certain pages that your homepage will directly link to or specific pages with call to action forms/buttons. Take for example a website that sells tents. As the main website you will have guides and product pages. In the blog you will have additional information that the search engines can index and bring in more potential customers. An example would be a blog post on the 5 best selling tents this season. Another blog post could be 5 camping tips every camper should know.

all the above posters are lying - the main reason is that no-one knows how to code a website, so they use wordpress

Absolutely true. Wordpress blogs are also easy to rank in G because of there ease of crawling.

Unless you're creating an authority site, let's face it...it saves a LOT more time with wordpress themes. I know how to code but working smart is my personal preference.

    Here is what I think:
A blog is generally used more as a timeline. A journey along a road. You make posts as you go, adding to the collection of posts like you would a diary, slowly building the word count. It is constantly changing and growing and adapting, and your readers join you for the ride.
while A website on the other hand is a different beast entirely. Whereas a blog is a journey along a road, your website is the destination. Your website is mostly static. You don't update it as much as your blog either. It generally isn't slow to grow, and you will want to start with all the webpages you will need. Not add them like posts one by one.

Well this might be one of the reasons to blog....

Blogs are extremely useful, both to the writer and the reader. The writer may have a lot of knowledge to share, and the reader may want an informal way to learn about a topic. Some people use blogs to find other people with similar problems, issues or situations. Blogs can be anonymous, which helps a lot of people share information without being known.

Some people may also like to state their feelings.

Looking at it from an 'engaging your target audience' point of view, opting to go for a blog as opposed to a static, information-based website does tend to be a little bit more personable.

From my experience, people have a tendency to accept information a little more freely when it is presented to the in a blog format. I suppose when you come across a sterile, information-riddled site you tend to be more suspicious about the 'organisation' behind the site.

A blog on the other hand is generally associated with a 'regular person' who has some insight or interest into a particular niche or topic.

Again, this is just from my personal experiences but in the case of the current site I'm running, I've opted to have it formatted as a blog because I want to talk with my target audience, not at them.

    I blog for SEO purposes.

Some people blog because they can't afford or can't design their own websites.

And most people blog like it were a journal so they can keep everything written/typed somewhere for reference.

Yep, I too blog for SEO purposes only. And first word press came back out in 2003 as a blogging platform. Since it's founding, it has become more than a blogging platform and more of a way to build dynamic websites.

For me, the more blogs discussing your site/product/service, the more popular your site is.

That's like saying "Why do lumberjacks use chainsaws?" "Because no one knows how to use an axe."

Why do SEOs use automated tools for link building?

Its white-hat...ish....SEO and can be quite effective. You just have to be sure you are doing it on good platforms that Google holds in high esteem.

partymarty is totally right. Wordpress takes 1 minute to install and a day to configure at the most. So, everyone prefers it...
