    What would you do?

Content changes have been made. This is pretty much an authority website now struggling after the recent update.

What's you number 1 guess for what happen? We zero it down to over-all re-evaluation of backlink and PR by google.

You need to check your backlink profile. Looks like your website is penalized.

My #1 guess is linkbuilding as it's the case 90% of the time. Link sources and/or anchor text. In case of anchor text it's over-optimization.

The other might be thin and/or repetitive content. For example targeting 2 very closely related keywords on multiple pages like: product review, product scam.

Checking the rankings of your own brand might be a good indication of penalty.

If the website is indeed penalized you will have a hard time ranking even for brand terms.

    Search in Google for:
    Brand
    brand.com
brand com (with space instead of dot)

Especially brand com is important. If you're not on the first 3 pages for this it's most likely over-optimization or Panda hit.

Also, are you using WMT? If so, check the Manual penalties section.

Very hard to pin point just from the simple traffic graph. Google is combining multiple things in each major update nowadays.

Thats one hell of a drop, do you have a penalty in webmaster tools, are you building gsa links like a animal...you definitely have some sort of penalty hitting you try using semrush to see which links are toxic and send in a disavow file if nothing works

Looks a lot like sites who abuse PBNs and then Google ignores all their links that fit the "PBN" profile. This is especially true if the site has been buying into paid PBNs where their link profile is constantly dying off and being rebuilt because the networks let sites die after the hosting runs out. Smells like an algrymthic linkbuilding penalty for sure. In which case it would be by the page, not site wide.

Might be PBN related as they are constantly after them.

I only see it with the PBNs you described tho. If they are Private or Public doesn't really matter since people treat their own private networks as crap too. Risk is higher with public ones sure as it's out of your control.

I call them Lighters. Like those one-time-use lighters that you throw away after the fuel runs out. No attachment or effort put in them at all. Accepting all kinds of links and filling it with random content unrelated to the original topic, or any specific topic for that matter.

I don't think they are simply ignoring them tho (if it's indeed the reason) since penalty/filter is definitely applied to money site.

What does "pretty much an authority website" mean? Lots of posts? Help me out with this...

What kind of link building have you done to your kinda, sorta, maybe, slightly, possibly authority site?

    Thanks for the reply,

Were sure it's not the content (thin / similar) issue..
Also sure about the penalty (some pages still rank very strong for competitive pages), the drop is to positions 11, not 40+..

The 1 point to look for is obviously linkbuilding, but after alot of analyzing (also our different sites in the same niches), we came to the conclusion that recent updates included a re-evaluation of links, which gave some of the competition a sudden rise, and for us the sad lows.

I think you are right in your assumption.

The only difference is that this site did not acquire any other links for a long time, which puts us in the position to believe -

    - it's an algo linkbuilding penalty like you suggest (true that it's for 1 page).
    OR
    - The overall recent update catched to our loss of links, and competitors continued on building. Then G re-evaluate the 'power' and we fell short.

in any case, the drop is for the main keywords but not to 40th positions, more like 7, 11, 15 etc..

    Suggestions to continue from here?
    Thanks,

That is highly likely actually. I experienced something very similar on one of my aff sites when "Fred" hit weeks back.

Do you target a specific topics(like fishing) or you write everything on your blog and no specific category?

The first place you should look into :)

No penalty, no gsa or other tools tbh.
I love semrush for historical data and kw discovery, but their backlink and "toxic" tools is pretty much garbage.

This website is about a specific topic. not a general blog/news site.

    wut??

Sounds like a common theme. What did you do to try and mitigate the effects? Did you succeed at all?

Yes, I did partially recovered it by 301 redirect.

Alas, many of the original links died so there wasn't enough power to push the site to the original spots.

One of my websites that has refused to regain its ranking might not be suffering from over-optimization or panda hit after all (following the brand space com).

Yes, it is a strong indication. But nothing is 100% bullet proof unfortunately.

Do you mean "refused" after you did 301 redirect? Or what did you do?
