This industry attracts so many outcasts. How many members are you still friends with?

This industry attracts so many outcasts. People come and go. They get rich and change or they get greedy and get locked up, assets seized. Overdoses are likely common but we don't know because we aren't close to the family. We hear about it through stories like Pofecker. Other times we just don't hear from them again.

Sometimes people dive into conspiracies and lose track of things. They get depressed and wreck their life. Throw away $25,000/day ventures.

I've met many members over the years, but often times when I meet one it's the last time.

I have a few old friends that I visit every year from here, and we frequently talk about where some of these people go. So many names of people - gone. I don't think any other industry is similar, except maybe criminal circles.

It's the same in some companies you work for, it moves a lot, people change, want other things and switch careers or follow their passions. Digital marketing is the same, some stay, other quits, Maybe one day you will not see me around here anymore. some people disappear without warnings, this is a forum and life outside of it makes you take choices and you can disappear one day for whatever reason :)

I've never met any non-staff from BHW in person, although there were some regular members here I considered friends.

Edit: Not real friends I had personal relationships with, just guys like @pewep and some old Jr. Exec developer guy I used to speak with on Skype occasionally. I didn't know these two personally, but both of them were cool guys I would consider being proper friends with.

There was one guy I used to talk to on Skype a lot. He was a pretty good developer, but started getting into shadier things. He's just gone now, and I have no idea what happened to him.

Then there were a few who I found out were going the "fake it 'til you make it" route here, except they never made it. I know in one case, their parents got sick of them freeloading and they were in the process of getting kicked out.

I've grew up reading forums as a kid, then i found BHW and it became my passion, it just grew on me. I have talked with a lot of people here and a few (Hey @Billy Batts i see you man) really really helped me make something out of this whole thing. I guess it's just how forums are, you don't really get close to that person, it's just there and then it's not for whatever reason.

I'm somewhat an outkast in my life and if it weren't for my long-time friends i'd just be home working lol

I think this industry attracts people that think outside the box or at least, people that try to, so i suppose that's why.

Some people take being an outcast in a negative sense. I don't think there's a problem with someone being an outcast by choice, it's not that people get outcast only for their crimes or they are not model citizens. Some people just want to be left alone as most people are assholes nowadays anyway.
Better to be an outcast and enjoy your solitude rather than have fake friends who'd turn their backs on you when you're not doing well or are ever ready to fuck you over.

Life throws curve balls, I think that this industry has a high turnover due to people finding purpose in something else.

The problem is that people begin in digital marketing (which you call make money online because you don't understand it's a real profession which require serious skills and commitment)... I had a shit load of struggles launching a legit business and from what I saw is that most wannabe digital marketers are day dreamers, loving the idea to become rich by making money online but unable to really develop the real skills needed in order to achieve that. I was like that, dishonest with myself.

You can find a purpose in digital marketing but it must go way beyond "make money online", it's about building something viable and pushing your vision in the world and building it brick by brick... money comes after and you will feel like shit because your life goes nowhere and you can't be proud about anything. Then why not only find a job?...

The mindset about all this digital world is flawed for years now and I admit that I was the first one to be trapped by it, it's important to be honest with yourself when you don't go anywhere and in most case people are delusional... I met a lot of people here who are reading the forum for years but not beginning anything and thinking success will come from the sky without hard work, or finding tricks to become rich, it rarely works like that at all.

My solution is to work in digital marketing first, doing 8 hours a week developping these skills professionally, then you launch your thing on the side until you become wealthy enough to quit your job. Most other paths are destined to fail, and if you don't love to stay on a computer screen for 8 hours a day, you are misleading yourself...

Yeah the problem is that the general perception of "Making Money Online" equals "Making Money Fast and Easy without Effort at all".

This means that maybe 80-90% of people here don't have a clue on what "Digital Marketing" really is, i know because i was like that.

It's just the Pareto Principle, a lot more newbies than Jr. Vips.

Very hard being friends with people you don't trust with your real name.
There are some exceptions, of course, but still...
I’ve gotten to a point where some guys on here not only know my real name but also know where I’m from and what line of work I’m in irl. But I’ve yet to shake their hands.

These are people I trust that info with and know that they’ll respect my privacy. Don’t want to miss anyone out so won’t mention their names but they know who they are. ;)

Some clowns like @TheMoneyWizard dropped off the planet like OP said and never logged back in. I owe him a cold one.

I signed up when I was in my early teens and so did @macdonjo3 so I definitely get what he’s saying when he mentions outcasts and social rejects lol.

Edit : last seen 40 mins ago. :o

Businesses carry people away, most times they remember the forum but, no time left, not even 2 hours to visit the forum in a day. And life differs, same way years do. Some years changes some people's goals, as a result of disputes or they got a better paying work.

Happy to see this message, I can't count how many hours, how many laughs we shared without even being in real a single time.

This industry attracts alot of extreme introverts, socially awkward people, people suffering from social anxiety.

Kinda sad actually

These are the exceptions I'm talking about. I was fortunate enough to meet a few of my online friends irl. Today we meet every few weeks with our families, and our kids are friends, too.

That is actually not sad... what did those people turn to 40 years ago?

Probably not something as productive as IM as that was not an option.
