So I'm thinking of starting a porn tube. However I'm not insanely rich and my budget is quiet low.
I have a script, hosting is what worries me. I've never hosted videos before so I'm not sure if just advertisements would even be enough to cover costs.

Anyways my questions are; do you think the digital ocean cloud hosting plan of 40$ a month is enough to host videos?

If so would you be able to give me an estimate on how much videos it could probably host.

And my second question is, do you think advertisements and pop ups would be enough to cover the hosting bill?

I saw a video host that has movies and tv shows called played to.
They don't have premium just lots of popups and ads. Are popups really enough to cover they host bill or do they just have really deep pockets?

You don't need to host the videos. You can embed them or syndicate them directly from the sponsors. You can also use PlugRush to trade, sell or buy traffic.

I want to host them though.
that way instead of sending traffic to red tube or whatever I could put ads in my videos and let people embed them to make more money.

Why not start the easy way, then when you start making some money then you can look at hosting the Vids or a CDN?

Well I guess I could. But can you give me an estimate on how much $40 per month can host at Digtal Ocean?

    They give you
    4GB Memory
    2 Cores
    60GB SSD Disk
    4TB Transfer

How much would that be able to host?

    I just want numbers.

I saw a website called wistia.

    They give you
    $ 200
    Unlimited
    videos

    500 GB

But that's seems rather expensive and unreasonable.

OP, you are not going to get what you want for $40 IMHO, just get standard hosting, embed the vids and try to make some cash once you are earning $100-$200 pm then you can afford to implement your plans.

I haven't checked the costs in a long time but it is very easy to do so with Google, try it.

The secret is played to just has really deep pockets and is in the business of wasting money, because we know that is how every business stays alive.

    Thanks for the reply sir.

Just out of curiosity, how do websites like played to survive? These guys are hosting full movies/tv shows and on top of that that pay you to upload, and yet they don't have premium membership?

Are they just super rich? I imagine they'd be paying $xxx, xxx's on hosting.

    Hosting is so dam expensive.

That cannot really be the case. I really doubt they just like throwing money around.

I was gonna make a play-tube ;) but i got scared because you're suppose to get a license (or some shit like that) and i just didn't want that responsibility. Also i was worried about being sued by some parent who loves using the internet to entertain their children but hates what they see and instead of punishing them they punish your website :( Also if you want tons of visitors i suggest you don't adrape your website (meaning no popups every damn 5 seconds).

As long as you have open registrations and allow users to upload I believe you are safe under the DMCA safe harbor act for copyright laws. You simply have to remove content upon copyright holder request within 7 days I believe.

As for parents,I don't believe they can sue you on any legal grounds. If you are really worried you can place RTA tags onto your website to better prevent kids from accessing the website.

So you're telling they profit from popups, enough to pay users, as well as cover the hosting bill?

You should really consider asking these questions in one of the adult webmaster forums - a lot of people there have experience with tubes.
