    Hi guys,

I'm considering getting a motorbike for general getting around.

I only need my car 1 time a week, its a trip to a sports club I go to but most weeks I get a lift (a friend who also goes lives 2 mins down the road)

    A 125cc bike will cost £15 a year tax, £160 insurance, £30 MOT and it does 80 mpg @ £6.50 a gallon

Additional costs are helmet (£100), gloves (£40), Jacket (£60) and CBT test (£85)

Wayyyyyy cheaper than a car, and it will do all my needs, it will probably be way more fun too.

The bike I am thinking of is a Honda CBF125, looks like a sensible bike, I don't want enduro or sports bike... yet...

But is there anyone on here who uses a bike daily as their only transport?

Going by my calculations above a motorbike is cheaper to get than the bus! I don't know how i have not thought of this before.

Like i said there is only 1 trip a week where i need a car and i have that covered...

    Makes sense?

Over here in Toronto, first thing they tell you at the course is "70% of you in this room will die on a motorcycle". It's pretty dangerous man, and it doesn't matter how good of a driver you are, it's the other people on the road you have to worry about. I've lost a family member due to motorcycle accident, I despise them.

Aside from that it makes sense.

of course the running costs of a bike is much less than a car BUT
better to be alive in a car than dead on a bike
    I f*cking hate bikes,
lost too many friends by bikes.
    feel really strongly against them

I'm sure if you ride like a prat like I see so many of them do, then people die.

I know the risk, your 44 times more likely to die on a bike than a car but I doubt I will do 150 miles a month.

Bus is much safer, plus if it rains real bad, you can't ride the motorbike.

Most deaths caused from motorcycle accidents occur close to the rider's home. Doesn't matter how long you're riding for and how far you are going, fact is it's very dangerous and you're trusting your life in the hands of drivers that surround you.

If saving the extra cash outweighs the risk, sure go for it, I don't know what else to tell you. Just trying to help, hope you understand.

Not to mention, but if the bus gets into an accident while you're on it, you'll be looking forward to a chunky settlement after the law suit.

If a mother fucker put me in a wheel chair, then yes.

If a bus hit a wall and I feel a bump, I'm not faking injury for cash.

Not the way I was brought up, work hard for your cash. It feels so much better when you own it through hard work and not fraud/hand outs.

    2 Bikes - CBR 600 and GSXR750 - old schoolio days.

    3 tickets in 1 day :)

You may think you can resist the temptation - but any motorized vehicle that can break nearly every speed law with a mere 1/4 twist of the throttle in first gear - will wind you up in some form of situation sooner or later. Maybe a big hawg like a Harley - but a rice rocket is just a matter of time.

Sold the GSXR to get a smoother riding Honda CBR. Meh ... 1st crash was all me - stupid kid in his 20's and invincible - superman @ 45 mph thru a red light intersection - imagine sliding into homebase head first - but about 3 feet off the ground in mid air - got super lucky and just some road rash and major plastic damage to mirrors and farrings.

2nd one wasnt so lucky. Issue is skin n bone vs. 3,500 lb. metal object going 35 mph - you lose - 100% of the time. And frankly its rarely the 2 wheeled guys fault - its the freakin brain dead idiots [ usually chicks ] who have like zero awareness of the other objects on the road, and they feel like they are the only freakin thing on the pavement.

Anyway, lady decided that the double yellow line she crossed at a blind corner in the mountains near Julian CA didnt apply to her. It was super important she didnt have to drive another 200 yards down the hill to a turn out to make a proper U Turn. So she just flipped a bitch and took out 2 of us on bikes as we turned the blind corner in some twisties. It was her car or a huge oak tree or the semi truck behind her coming down the hill. I took my chances with the Oak Tree in hte dirt off the highway. Stupid hag hit my friend first and then kept driving off road and put her POS car in front of me off the shoulder anyway. So I got her, her windshield - and the freakin tree. Yaaaa ... Saved the brain bucket. 2" gash in that - bike went end over end several times over her cars hood cuz I t-boned her front passenger tire - and as my feet went thru her windshield I was flipping too and was like in slow mo' - and can still see the images of my new CBR flipping end over end like 3 times in slow mo ... Matrix style.

Bike totalled - nice ride to the hospital in an ambulance for me and my bro. Was a bloody mess.

Dude who drove me home from Hospital with my bike in the back of his truck and who was 300 yards ahead - swore in the 1 hr car ride home with all my bros we'd all wear our helmets - cuz back then it wasnt the law ] - as we looked at the huge gash my lid. 20 days later he killed his roomate, my friend and his best friend - flipped him off the back of his CBR-1000 over a speed bump in the parking lot of their condo complex - just got home from "across the street" having pizza - 300 yards form their place.

No matter how bad ass a ninja you are on two wheels - there's always a dumber asswipe with car looking for you - you arent surrounded by steel - they are - you lose.

If a bike becomes your main mode of transpo - best of luck. They say there are 2 types of cyclists ...

    - those that have been down
    - those that are going down - soon

Statistics indicate its the 1st 6 months most major shit happens. Was true for me :)

Id say - Get another way to roll, else they may be feeding you DICK's ... thru a straw.

This thread is a bit negative. IMO you can never be safe enough. The roads are full of idiots, and while on a motorbike and not only, you have to watch out not only for yourself but for others too. I wouldn't really want to use a motorbike as a method of transport but to ride one socially or for the joy of it or even every now and then is quite fun. At the end of the day you can trip on the pavement and end up disabled. So if you feel like getting one to commute, then do so, just be cautious and never force your way through or else you may be unlucky.
