    is this a good idea?

i would have them on different hosts of course and make sure there is no duplicate content. but i thought it would work for having multiple page 1 listings in the big g. any thoughts or experiences?

Great idea - Dominating more than one top result in the search engines will skyrocket your ctr.

I always have 4-5 feeder sites that I have to target certain keywords. I can usually keep one on the first page sometimes 2-3. That way I can always have something ranking whenever google is changing algorithms.

I used that method few times and worked well. Key is to choose very close semantic keywords, even though I used sometimes exactly same.
Additionally when I ran PPC I often had 4-5 adwords listings on the same page, different accouts, landing pages etc.
As you mentioned no dupe content, different IP for hosting, different back linking as well. If you let's say use profile links don't link to all your sites from same profiles. If possible don't buy 10 domains on the same day from the same register with same whois data.
It will take some tweaking but in principle it can work well, you can even sometimes see several "review" sites popping up on same results page which are all owned , including product/service site, by the same guys.
As always that is my opinion and I am sure there are many different thought on this.

    That's like a great idea.
