Hello guys, long time lurker first time posting here.
A couple of months ago a friend of mine (doctor in training) wanted to start a blog about health and just like any other person starting a blog, he wanted this wide and big behemoth site with broad categories, so we started it together. Now I work in an online casino (offline marketing, mainly meeting with affiliates and showing them a good time on company money) and I have around 20 hours a week to devote to this blog since I recently stopped drinking. We started it, got adsense approved within a week and he started writing the content. I recruited another friend that's a psychologist to also write content. I would do keyword research and write some content, but they are the two writers. We started making some money (~500eur monthly) but we seem to be stuck there.
Since it's my first time running this kind of a site I am out of ideas what to do. It's just 4 categories with blog posts in them. I do not think that PBN is a good idea. There are some small clusters of posts since both of my friends pick a topic and write 3-4 articles on them so I interlink them and if I can persuade someone, I get backlinks from relevant websites. But most of the articles get stuck on positions 15-30 in SERPs. The only keywords that I can secure position #1 for are the reaaly long tail ones with ~50 monthly searches. Now I do some blog commenting (drop the link and make it look natural), I do forum commenting, a shitload of facebook sharing and google +1 (In my experience, 2k social signals will rank you for a week or two tops). I've talked to the guys in our SEO department at work but they are kinda retarded (they have a huge budget so they basically tell me to throw money at it).
I don't want to turn this site into a clickbaity black hat website. It will double revenue, I've tried it with a couple of articles, setting a different image and description just for facebook and posting it in groups full of idiots but I do not want to get the website penalized after Penguin and Panda and all other google predators.
So my questions is do you guys have ideas.Should I change the monetization method? The ads are optimized since we did a shitload of split testing and the website is pulling around 300 daily visitors out of which only ~20 are organic. Should I just keep making it bigger? Should I build a PBN and just link to the small clusters of articles and rank them? Should I secure expensive backlinks?

First of all blog commenting and forum signature links are not going to help for getting ranked better, they are just good for referral traffic.

After reading your post I can say that try guest posting. You have already more than one writer so tell them to build unique content. Submit to a high authority site. The link will provide you link juice that will increase your organic traffic.

Coming to monetization, 300 daily visit is really good for adsense so stick with it. Once it crosses the mark of 1000 you can go for buysellads or direct ad selling.

Thanks for clearing up blog commenting for me, I always figured even if it's a nofollow link it will do some good. As for buysell adds does it give better money than adsense? I really am looking to expand this website. The content is all original but just as any other big site you need a lot of articles to make it 'feel' aged. As I mentioned it's 4 broad categories and right now we're writing both shareable content and content that is supposed to rank

If your site is big enough and getting large amount of traffic then 'Buysellads' is a very good option. They let you directly sell your ads to advertisers and they pay you the money after cutting a part of it as their commission.
