Well for starters if you're using google kw tool remember to check the "exact" box instead of broad :p

Then remember that at #1 you will get about 50% of the traffic, so if it says 2000 monthly searches, you would get about 1000 visitors from that keyword per month.

When selecting keywords there are basically 3 things you should consider: High volume of US monthly exact searches (most agree that 1000~1500 is fairly good for micro niche sites), high CPC (depends on personal taste, some say anything above 1$ is good, some prefer 1,5$ per click or even more. Obviously the more the better) and low competition. By low competition I don't mean that google keyword tool says its low, because as far as I know thats adword competition, not SEO.

Before checking competition you should check if exact match domain is available. Like "keyword(.)com/net/org". Most people here say that these 3 are the strongest, and you shouldn't use anything apart from these. One more thing, never search for available domains on godaddy, they have a bad reputation for buying up domains that users search for and they think is valuable. I can recommend namecheap instead.

To check SEO competition simply open up google and type in your keyword. Now you can see some results, but this doesn't really means anything. You have to look for sites that are actively targeting your keyword. For that, type in intitle:"keyword" . If you search this way you will get all sites that has your keyword in their title. Next, add inurl:"keyword" to your search (so now it looks like this: intitle:"keyword" inurl:"keyword"). With this you will get all sites that has your keyword in both the URL and in the title, which matters a lot for SEO.

Now you can measure your competition. If the first page is full of irrelevant and poorly done sites and the total number of sites that google found isn't higher than maybe a few thousands (the less the better) then competition is weak. If the first page if full of old, high PR, well organized sites, or god forbid, exact match domains, then the competition is strong.
