Google "ephedrine vs. ephedra" (without quotes).

    3rd results:

    http://ephedrinevsephedra.com/

    Words on page: approx 350
"Ephedrine" is used 29 times (approx 8%)
"Ephedra" is used 30 times (approx 8%)

    Pages indexed: 5

This is what Google considers relevant and high quality.

Maybe not a lot of comp for the kw? According to Semrush it gets around 200 searches p month. Also site has age of n/a right now, will guess it wont be there long. Not sure how much $$$ can be made from a site focusing on such a low volume kw short term.

Maybe the dude has 100 sites like that.

I don't care how much money he makes, I'm just saying that site is everything Google says it doesn't like.

Currently have a 7 post blogspot blog that I keyword stuffed HARD and link spammed with GSA... pulling in around 50 unique a day from google, and making around 50-70 dollars a month off amazon.

It all depends on the competition. I have 50+ similar sites that I haven't touched in over a year, pretty much all still ranking #1 or #2 for main KWs. Although I probably would NOT waste my energy on new campaigns using this strategy.

Some good points, could be fresh and danced up there, could be really low competition or he could be doing some great offsite things you didn't notice. Or, maybe a combination of all of that.

I've been noticing over the last few months that "low quality" EMD's like that, and especially .com's will rank for that keyword and that keyword only which makes sense since if you consider it's not fair that if "billscarwash.com" doesn't rank for "bills car wash".

The EMD's i've been tracking haven't been ranking well for any other related keywords though, but maybe that's just because the sites im looking at aren't great, there's something wrong with each of them be in penguin or panda.

The point is, that EMD's still seem to hold a lot of power despite the recent updates. Would be interested in seeing other people's views on EMD's and if they're ranking for multiple related keywords at the minute.

I have a good EMD (with hyphens) that I built by hand with handwritten content for years. It's an amazing site full of great info about a topic in which I know a great deal. It was #1/2 in Google for 2 years, and now it's nowhere on the first 50 pages.

There's no keyword stuffing. No blackhat. No BS. The website is just gone.

The only thing I can think of that I did wrong was make it an EMD.

The funny thing is that Livestrong now ranks for my keywords, and Livestrong links to my site as one of its references.

The guy in #2 now is an EMD (no hyphens) with three pages on his site (one is content, the other one is a disclaimer, and the other one is a privacy policy). His site is kind of old, but that's it.
