If I had a company with 10,000,000 shares and I sell one share at the price of $100 - would that be a billion dollar valuation?
I guess not, that would be too easy...

But seriously... at what point is a company really a unicorn? How big has the outside investment to be to make it an 'approved' billion dollar valuation?

Well a company is valued mostly by its investments (atleast when its young). ex: If VCs/angels invested 100milion for 10% of the company, then it's valued 1000 milion enche 1 bilion. But other factors, mostly it's growth rate year after year counts a lotttttt.
