Ok so here is the deal, I have recently posted an ad on Ebay because I am trying to sell my car...it is a Shelby GT500 KR and I am selling it for 55K....As soon as I posted the ad I got like 5 people all asking me if the car was available then I reply yes it is available...then I get a message that looks like this:

"Great! I am interested in buying this car, I work on an offshore rig as an engineer and I can only access paypal so I will pay your price then my shipping agent will come and pick up the car in the next few days."

Many of the messages are similar but different stories like "i live in a sail boat and can only use paypal..." etc...I have even had one guy tell me he is going to pay with a bank draft without even looking at the car... Also all of them are willing to buy the car without even looking at it!

I have not given my pay pal email address or anything out but just want to know

    WHAT IS THE SCAM HERE?

Selling/buying properties should be done through escrow services, never ever PayPal.

This happened to me when I sold my iphone on CL. I got a bunch of texts from these kinds of people. They used the same story like: I live in this place so I cannot come, and all of them wanted to pay by paypal. It is like a guy sold a guide to a bunch of people and they are copying his story to scam people.

Logically speaking, even if I was unfamiliar with the details of the scam I would still be suspicious. I mean, not too many guys who are engaged in offshore work would have time to trawl craiglist, or really need a car for that matter.

As soon as I got to the word offshore, I though not another scammer. I wish these people could all be tied up and put on an island!

Since this thread is over 2 years old, I do believe the OP has overcome his issue and has hopefully sold his car.

I would suggest closing this thread as there is no more to be said IMHO.
