Contrary to belief is NOT the number of backlinks over time which will rank your site high - its the QUALITY.
You can easily throw your Angela/Paul/Social Bookmarking/Xrumer Forum backlinks in the thrash!! Seriously, they are not worth anything.

I just did some research and see a competing site ranking on page #1 in Google for a really good KW.
He has 17 (!) backlinks but they are all related to the niche.

I have 300 backlinks and good onsite SEO, he has a total SHIAT page, he doesnt even care about meta tags or H1, H2. His site is a joke. He only has one page indexed in google.

He is ranking because his 17 backlinks are from forums and sites ON TOPIC, he also has one link on ehow.com

Proves that 300+ Pauls/Angelas are not worth a penny. Instead of getting backlinks over months and hiring linkbuilders every month....build VERY FEW links but good quality related to your site.

Links coming from High PR page are also quality backlinks, right?

    Let's say 20 backlinks from onpage PR6++.

Google does not show ALL the backlinks to ones site. In my case, i have about 300 but only 30 shows up. How do you know how many backlinks he really has? Since you will never see them all this is just theory and assumptions. Also, it doesnt matter where backlinks come from, unrelated to your niche, as long as they are quality.

    Probably right
In Brazilian Big-G, one of the biggests keyword in the country has, in first spot, a site with less than 50 backlinks >.>

Again, like mentioned above, Google does not show all backlinks to your site. They may only be showing high PR sites.

The search engines are getting smarter and smarter.
In the long run, and even right now, I'm pretty sure it will be better to have links to relevant pages, than links to hi PR sites that are unrelated to yours.

Extreme Hat has the right idea. Copy the (good/relevant) links your competitors already have and then add more of your own.

And keep in mind that Google is changing their algorithm to focus on an individuals search and then put those previous searches/preferences high up on the persons searches. Meaning that that no matter what your page rank and links are, if not done right you won't even show up on the first page even if you had previously been there.

People can opt out of having this cookie placed on their computer, but few people even know about it.

market samurai and backlink watch. And his site is a one-pager which defies any SEO "logic". The KW has 7000 daily searches and he is on page #1 in Google with his 17 backlinks.

It could be a fluke. It could be his best friend works for google. Don't worry about it, just do what you do best and you'll eventually beat the hell out of him. Also, your top link in your sig isn't working. I'm interested in that one. Could you PM me a link to it?

Check with backlinkwatch or yahoo siteexplorer..there's NO way one site can be on top spot with few backlinks...

This is really old news, if you had been doing SEO before 2003 you would have experienced the sinking feeling of 100's of sites disappearing from the SERPS when the old PR/pagerank algo got replaced with the hilltop algo during the florida update.

Forget what the n00bs say about "nofollow", to win you need links from expert documents/pages...nofollow or not. wiki is a site full of expert documents.

Here's a link to the research paper that lead to google getting a patent for the hilltop algo
    http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~georgem/hilltop/

Do a search in google on "google patent hilltop algorithm" ;)

I have done it with less than 10 --- but it didn't mean much to be top 3 in google for the keywords that I ranked for. The keywords were popular, but only in a specific context.

For example, which is better to rank for "buy books" or "buy Davinci Code"? the first is a generic term with lots of results. The second is a specific action which will result in a sale. This was the problem I was in, my search was like 'buy books' (though not that one) and it didn't get traffic or buyers.

And as far as backlinkwatch or yahoo - neither one counts all my backlinks. They don't get the ones I know about (on my other sites) nor do they get all the sites that actually send me traffic. They are better than nothing, but they aren't totally accurate.

Can DMOZ and Yahoo Dir also be considered as expert documents?

If you can get your site listed on DMOZ, it will be a big boost for your backlinking efforts.
