    Nutshell version.

White Hat SEO uses all manual link building techniques.

Black Hat SEO uses mostly automated tools to build links.

Actually, technically speaking, white hat SEO isn't ANY form of linkbuilding. You can create "linkbait", and do on-site optimization, but that's about it.

Blackhat SEO is technically any form of linkbuilding.

I'm sure that'll open a debate, and its not my reasoning but how Google and the spam team dictates white hat vs. black hat.

Whitehat = Build a good site and pray people find and link to it.
Blackhat = Bulild Links and make $$$ and laugh at White Hatters.

This is exactly correct. Even the most benign of efforts you can do to gain links, are technically black hat and against what Google preaches for webmasters to do.

That being said, the vast majority of the revenue Google makes is from displaying other peoples links on their site (and their partners sites), so it's not so surprising that they like to capitalize on this portion, and just look at the web as a place where information is generated.

All business has a lot to do with marketing, and I've yet to meet a serious Internet marketer who doesn't do anything that under the strictest definition is black hat.

Most people trying to simply create good quality solid content, the way Google says you're supposed to, get no results. Then when you ask yourself what you did wrong, the obvious (and correct) answer is perhaps that idealistic view of the web is flat out wrong. Just with everything else in life, nothing is black and white, just figure out what works for you.

May I ask how a member has been here nearly an entire year and did not know this? I've seen this happen a quite a lot lately actually, guys with enroll dates of like 2010 or 2009 but like 2 posts asking really basic questions. Could they be like bots or something??? Like a bot signs up and waits a few months to it doesn't get ppl suspicious? Seems strange.
