I just got word that I was given ownership of two VERY good CO domains. I can tell you one of them has the same name as one of the top 5 gambling sites in the world, and the other is for one of the top retailers in the United States...

Now the question is, what should I do with them!? I have some ideas, but I'd love to hear what comments you guys have?

    Cheers,

    J

Not sure about the gambling site but if you took the name of a very well known retailer in the U.S. , then I doubt you're going to have it for very long.

it's a CO domain. Registered in Columbia. I'd like to see them try and get it from me.

Lol yeah right, you think if you got Google.co they'd let you keep it? Kiss those domains goodbye. If I were you I'd just park them and not draw any notice

Even if you could keep them - it doesn't necessarily mean you'll rank for those terms. In my view, url keywords have very little to do with eventual success.

Yeah and who better to give you advice about this kind of stuff then blackhatters who've been there and done that. No ones trying to put you down about it, we're just telling you if they're as big as your saying don't get too comfortable with them.

I've had domains like that before. About viagra. It wasn't even viagra.cc it was something like buyviagranow.cc . I've had 3-4 of that kind. Then pfizer filed a complaint with ICANN and confiscated my domains, because this is a trade mark. So if those names are trade marks...good luck

ok... Let's take a few steps back here. I don't want to argue with anyone, I just want to hear your creative ideas about what you think I can do with these domains (hoping they don't get taken away).

I'm not trying to rank for any keywords here. I'm trying to capture traffic of people typing in the URL incorrectly. Think about how many people miss the "m" at the end of the domain. I'm looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

full-page iframe the .com site, and put a timed content gateway on it.

user thinks they hit the official site. starts using it as normal. then BAM, you must take this survey to continue.

If you own a domain they cant just come and take it as much as they might want to. Its a first come first serve kinda thing.

Just because say Nike owns Nike.com does not mean they are entitled to Nike.co if someone else bought it.

They may sue and cause problems but unless you use it to do something in reference to their product or name they have no valid claims as far as i know.

For that matter if someone buys a .com in my birth name does that mean i can go take it from them?

Honestly I would call the company's in question and offer them a deal to purchase the domains and make an easy six figures maybe more and be done with it because your not going to really be able to use them withought causing problems.

If he contacted them asking if they want to buy it, it's not only alerting the company of the situation, but he'd be trying to get profit out of taking their name. They could easily just take it and pay him whatever he registered for it and that's it. That's what I think what would happen anyway.

No, but that's because your birth name is not something you're copyrighting.

If you get a domain with a copyrighted name in it, they can either take you to court OR they can bitch at ICANN, at which point ICANN is at liberty to give your domain away (I have had a domain for awhile now which I'm trying to prevent this from happening to, and I've done some research on the subject ... ICANN is able to do this.).
