I was reading an interesting article the other day about banner advertising and how it can be a very powerful method of marketing.

I found this surprising because I've always read that banner advertising is pretty ineffective. After all, most people tend to pay little attention to banners and will hardly ever click on them.

But what most marketers have realized is the hypnotic power banner advertising a have on people. People might not consciously notice a banner and click on it, but at a subconscious level they are aware of the brand and the message. In fact, when the same banner is shown over and over again, people tend to remember/recall the brand better and will tend to have a 'warm and fuzzy' feelings toward the brand when they are ready to open their wallet

What does this mean? I this case, this means that banner has a longer lasting effect that you might think. Sure, a person might not click and buy the minute they see a banner...but the chances of them buying increases EACH TIME they see the (same) banner

Repetition can be very powerful and this technique/concept doesn't necessarily have to be applied specifically to banner advertising.

    Will add more tomorrow....

Yes, this is true. I have seen a condom banner on some websites maybe 20 times already and now I will buy only the advertised condoms :D And this is true... I don't know why but I won't buy any other condoms.

Too bad i don't see banners to often :D
Oh and if you buy advertised products you are more secure, since you know that the owner paid for advertising his product.

It's working the same with TV advertising, for instance. First, you'll get flooded with the same advertisement for a certain product. And then, one day when you need this kind of product, you'll just buy the advertised product without thinking. It happens mostly automatically because your subconscious "remembered" the brand/product. And, of course, this can also happen with banner advertising.

As "therat" said, it is all part of branding. The repetition of the banner is driving home the message of the brand. Magazine advertisements and billboards are other examples of this.

Companies that launch major banner campaigns understand this and aren't worried in the least about CTR. In fact many times they will have a specific banner(s) just for branding and then another banner(s) to generate click-throughs. Banner advertising is effective but it can become quite costly.

    ok,

i guess part two would be how to take advantage of repetition to make some $$. yesterday i mentioned how banner advertising had a low short term impact on people, but that the long term effect is a huge trust factor + willingness to buy.

but, imo the power of repetition doesn't necessarily have to be limited to banner advertising.....and it can be used to make money not just by branding a product, but by taking advantage of the brand.

If you know that companies spend millions of dollars in advertising costs...not just to make sales, but to build their brand (like you guys said above), why not help yourself to the piece of the pie by promoting items that have a certain buzz factor? Brand trust and recognition has been established for you, all you have to do is find the aff company promoting the item (usually linkshare or commission junction for commercial items) and place banner/text advertising where the advertiser places them :)

You don't have to worry about competition with this. In fact, the more competition the better, because you've got 1000s of people reinforcing the brand for you. In this respect, you stop seeing your competition as 'competition' and start seeing them as your team. By the time a person has seen your ad, they would have seen 1000s of other ads beforehand, increasing your chance for a clicks/cookie drops/and sale(s). As long as the trend is hot, the company is spending money on branding, and you are reinforcing the brand via your marketing methods, you will make conversions. It's all in the numbers.
(btw, i'm not talking about csing here....i'm talking legit cookie drops from pple clicking on your ad banners...then comming back later on to buy)

But that's one way you can have repetition work for you. I'll go into more later. IMO, i can go on and on and on about this, so i'd rather break it up into small posts than one big massive gigantic post.

This is done by many large corporations to indoctrinate kids. Take McDonalds and Coke.
