    Hi Guys,

We are going to try a very high-level post here and introduce BHW to the idea of BIG DATA and how even as a small guy you can participate. Fortune 500 companies are aware that data is the biggest most important aspect to marketing right now and is the future of online marketing. Understanding who your visitors are and creating specific audiences based on actions is where the BIG MONEY is laying.

In this post, we are going to be talking about creating your own audiences in the world of Big Data.

To start, let me explain an example:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm planning on completing a Media Buy campaign, and I have $100.00. What can I expect?
Well, let's say I'm paying a $1.00 CPM, I can expect to receive 100,000 impressions.
Now, because the 100,000 impressions never interacted with my site before or my ads, I can expect the average CTR which is .1-.2%.

That means my $100 will buy me approximately 100 clicks and if I'm lucky 200 clicks.
My CPC costs will be $.50-$1.00

    ok..........

So now, let's just say we have an audience of 100,000 people that we have collected over the past 3 months.
I then take this audience and say, ok, let me send a media buy campaign out to these 100,000 people that have already been on my site before. That same cost at $1.00 CPM, with a 1.0-2.0% CTR (due to remarketing) will produce 1,000-2000 clicks, at a cost of $.05-.07 CPC

My same $100 drove a lot more traffic, and that traffic was targeted, and now I can make a GREAT profit on my CPC.

    --------------------------------------------------

Ok... wow... what did I just say.

Basically, I'm telling you, right now, you can setup audience pixels on your site, and drop cookies on users computers that are engaging with your site at any moment.

Let's say you have a site that gets 10,000 unique visitors/M via SEO traffic. Well over a couple months you can have an audience list of 30,000 people. Then you can target an ad campaign to these people.

    What else can you do:

    • Build an audience list of people that went to checkout, but didn't
    • Build an audience of people that read your articles
    • Build an audience of people that come to your site from Facebook (retarget on FB ads for high CTR, low CPC)
    • Build an audience of people that watch your videos (in-stream ad retargeting)

What most marketers don't know is that these audiences are almost as good as mailing lists, and you don't need someone to opt-in t put them on a list, you just need to drop a cookie on their computer.

Below is a small sample of some of the lists I have created over the past few months, in overall I have over 5,000,000 users on lists to use in marketing campaigns in various niches.

    lits.png

What does this mean for me?

    1. If I want to promote a new Forex product, instead of going to the open marketing, I can market to my list of 280,000 individuals. I can get higher CTRs, lower CPCs, and larger profits
    2. Another marketer may say to me, hey can I market to your audience list. I create a CPM price for my ultra targeted list, and instead of running the offer myself I just collect the checks on my audiences.
    3. You've all heard it's all in the list.... well here is an easier one to create

    How do I get Started?

You build your audiences in multiple RTB networks such as Google or SiteScout, this allows your list to be in their system so when you setup a Google Campaign you can market to JUST your audience list.

This is when RON comes into power, because you do a RON to JUST your audience list, and you'll find them on the web.

Nice, and I don't have to pay Google to keep my data like I do with an email list.

Can you explain this a little bit more? How do you market then if they are not on your list?

You place remarketing tags on your site, which are basically 1X1 pixels. These tags then drop cookies on a users computer that says that they have been to your site before, and depending on what action your tag is on, it could be that they:

    Visited your site
    Bought something
    Checkout, but then left, etc

Then, if you for example, created your audience in Google Adwords, you can then market to your list throughout the entire Google network. You do a media buy and set it to RON, but just on your audience. So it will go out to the Billions, but only be seen and cost you on those initial people on your list.

Since they have been on your site already, and you are remarketing, you will gain higher CTRs then ever before.

About time someone wrote about data here on BHW. I am a huuuge fan of data. A lot of people think that Google Analytics is bad for your site bla bla , but one must understand how powerful it can be if used right.

For people to understand why this data is so important you have to understand two major concepts :
    Micro conversions
    Macro conversions.

Micro conversion is something that might not result in revenue but yet can narrow down your prospects ( like for example : people reading a particular article you want them to read might be a micro conversion.

Macro conversion is what people loosely call a conversion.

Now, you can use all these micro conversions and make them into macro conversions if you know how to use them. ( I think the OP has brilliantly laid out as to how to do this ) . You can also use micro conversions as KPIs : Key performance indicators ( more data yay! ) . It can tell you whether your site is actually doing what it is supposed to be doing.

I use these kind of things to show it to my off line clients and this helps . Why ? Because my offline clients ( even your's ) dont know jack shit about rankings and SERPs so its better to explain in terms like these.

There is a lot of way in which you can see this thread. If you are new to all this, trust me this post is a gold mine!

Google's chief economist Hal Varian has told that , the sexy job in the next 10 years would be that of statisticians. I truly believe so ! Data is big if you know how to tame it.

Great post OP. Thanks and rep given!

Unfortunately when it comes to Europe, the new cookie law makes things harder. Other then that, data has always been the key to money IMO.

I've always been looking for data though haven't yet taken it seriously enough. Those with data are those with money.

All the large companies do this and you can easily notice it whenever you search for something you need and then you see that company's ad everywhere you go.

What if you're sending the users directly to a CB product or a CPA offer? Anyway to drop these cookies or will you need to build your own LP?

For people who don't want to deal with the technical aspect, there are services like AdRoll and Retargeter that handle all of the fancy stuff and deliver your ads to most of the big display channels.
