The Myth n’ Links: SEO is not dead, it's just left the building

Think that listening to gurus will tell you everything you need? Well, you’re mythtaken.

Exposition: I'm a long-time BHW lurker. After attending an UnGagged conference and just loving the attitude, I talked my way into joining the company. When the opportunity came about to manage the UnGagged section on BHW, and since they couldn't find anyone more qualified ( or brave enough) to take the job on, I was volunteered to handle Mod duties. Be gentle, it's my first time...

So... Been reading too many "SEO is dead" articles lately?

White Hat gurus love trying to debunk "SEO myths" while pushing their "secret sauce" recipe for fixing everything they've just complained about. The only dead thing about SEO is the horse they're still flogging.

Let’s not pretend there aren’t still ways to game the system. After all, Google is still just a machine. SEO may die when artificial intelligence gets out of control and the robots rise up and enslave humanity. But you’re probably safe until then.

Sure, the gurus sound authoritative but you’re only getting half the information. No IM guru is going to answer all of your problems in an obscure blog post because it's just not in their own interest. It's the same with every method thread you ever read. There's no step-by-step walkthrough to guaranteed success, the only way for you to find the missing pieces of the puzzle is to talk it out with people that have been sciencing the shit out of it.

    Bunk and debunk

I'm not going to bore you with another list of popular myths and mythconceptions (that’s the last pun, I swear), because there’s plenty of stuff about this on BHW. More importantly, the debate is waaay more interesting than a pitchy top 10 list.

    Like these threads:

    https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/is-blackhat-seo-dying-out-serious.958244

Great points made, great points countered. When everyone agrees, no-one learns anything. Debating these topics is what really helps us find the bigger picture.

You shouldn't settle for half-baked information from a self-proclaimed guru promising that the rest of the facts are in their $37 ebook. Short, vague answers aren’t useful - you’ve got to try arguing their points and get a discussion going. When people have to defend their position, that's when they have to start explaining it and this is one of the best things about Black Hat World. Nothing's taken for granted, everything is questioned and when people are passionate, the arguments are where you'll learn something new.

This is what inspires the "UnGagged method". Sharing tactics, having discussions to root out the flaws and studying the variables that make more than just sexy click-bait from both speakers and attendees.

    Spike the Kool-Aid

We want people with this same attitude at UnGagged. People who'll take on discussions of this caliber (along with a couple of drinks) to like-minded individuals in Vegas. Imagine how far a real-life debate could go when you're talking to some of the most forward-thinking SEO's that are out there. They might not all be Black Hat, but you’ll be impressed to find how dark their grey areas go when the gloves come off.

Maybe you want to talk about your favorite keyword tools. Or you want to talk about your method using other brands. As long as you aren’t drunkenly yelling at a cop about keyword stuffing, you’ll get the answers you’re looking for, from people that really know their stuff. You'll get to the finish line much faster, and laugh all the way to the bank.

Check Us Out, we might change your mind about Conferences. Honest discussion, exposing the blind spots, and going off-road with SEO is the UnGagged way. In Fact, that's getting properly UnGagged.

Don’t settle for the list of ingredients, get the whole recipe and you can start cooking much faster.

Great post @Zombiesmasher and fellow UnGagged-ite? Love your use of mythtaken and mythconceptions.

I too hate how 'gurus' mythlead people, that's why I love UnGagged! It's not a conference filled with fluffy, unicorns dancing on rainbows (although that would be AWESOME) but it delves into the tactics that actually work with real-world examples.

PSA: Don't drunkenly yell at cops about keyword stuffing, remember they have tasers.

Oh and one final point, purely to wind @Apricot up, not only is SEO dead, but content is king!

I have to really wonder what the point of "the sky is falling on SEO" threads are about, what motivates the people who create them. One good explanation is that they want to discourage people from working hard at link-building and doing work that could threaten their position. It could also be that they truly believe in what they are peddling. Personally, I have not seen any evidence that SEO is dead or dying. Sure it is HARDER today, but as someone said in one of those threads, it is better this way, because less competition to worry about. The hard workers and determined people WILL rank their websites, one way or another!

I can tell you for sure that cheap seo is dead. There is no way you can rank for anything worth ranking for without serious investment $$$...
AND... having loads of money to invest in seo also does not guarantee any success... you must really understand this game or you will not see return on investment.

at the moment seo success is money+knowledge.

    that's how i see it.

There's no more "cheap SEO on the dolla" at least for long sustainable projects. SEO is dead, LONG LIVE CONTENT!

Last time I checked, I have yet to see ANY gurus say SEO is dead. Any chance could you link to some examples - or is this part of the "myth narrative" that gurus are promoting this?
