I have my business site (2y/o), about 60 money sites and few sites I use for testing and stuff.
My business site is all white hat, I do a little backlink exchange time to time but nothing major and got it on 1 page in G for few related KW
My money sites are white hat, don't do much except adding a few article here and there.
My testing sites gets all the stuff I read here, from tier 1 and 2 SB blasts, social bookmarking, fiverr gigs, etc...
Those testing sites don't go very far.
I even made a social bookmark on my business site to lose it to page 3 in G. First time I did something for it.

Then I made my wife's site in 30-35 minutes, pure hand coded html/php 2 pages with content and a couple of pictures + a checkout for her products. It's a EMD.com
and boom, solid (above amazon for that product) #1 for that KW and #5 for base KW. Didn't do nothing, no backlink, no bookmarking, no nothing...

The less I do, the higher in SERP!!

Yes indeed. No more SB, Xrumer, AMR, bookmarking, edu/gov backlinks and all the BS for me in the future. I plan to put them all high in SERP from now doing nothin' ;)

New sites do get that 'honeymoon period' before dropping and finding their natural position. Though i agree that SB, XR and AMR are not so effective these days.

This, however add to the equation is was an EMD in a likely non competitive niche.

You could direct this to being all about the keyword, picking easy keywords to rank for with available EMDs is the way to go for instance.

There is no doubt about it, sites will always need unique content and backlinks to rank well in tough niches; I'm guessing your post is rather sarcastic.

I would say just that every site is different, some will have great ranking almost without backlinks and some really needs them. I have both kind of sites and I'm pretty sure my tough competition sites would never rank so well without lot of black hat seo stuff. For example I have blog I'm building since 2008, lot of content and everything and I just could not rank it even it was much much better than any competition site, I was really desperate. Few months ago I started black hat stuff, everything I could find and effort and finally I'm number 1 in google. I have another blog which is number 3 for competitive keyword also, has lot of content and only about 20 manual comment backlinks and one exchange link with similar blog...
My point is that it might be good to wait if you even need to use black hat tools, but sometimes it is necessary.

Aaaarg!! This is the thing that annoys me the most!

All my life I have been taught over and over and over again that the more you do - the more you get.

And even though I know that what Cody is saying is true, something inside me just won't let me "not work" on a site and expect something in return... This is just ridiculous, because for the past several weeks traffic and sales have been plummeting and I have been working nonstop to fix that - to no avail.

Cody - you made no backlinks for that? Absolutely nothing?

Because come on now - you can't tell me that without doing any onsite SEO - no high-pr blogs/web 2.0/soicial bookmarks - today my site would be in front of that of my competitors? Because with all that - it isn't and I might as well try... doing nothing...?

Anybody else had this kind of - the less you do the more you get experience?

Because I frankly believe that George Brown's

    1) 2hour work
    2)Forgret
    3)???
    4) proffit!!

    is complete bullshit.

On second thought - G favors new sites, so in a week your wife's should get the G Dance and drop - I am curious to find out how this plays after that

Because my site outranks 900k others and in another instance 1,5+mil on some made up keywords, on which only I have an article written with a propper h1 and so on and so on.
