i just saw this posted in a forum... makes one glad for work online.

"Do you know anyone personally who's in his or her forties or have you
heard any accounts of how people in their forties can't get hired for
jobs anymore due to businesses wanting younger people who will work
for less money and on account of forty-somethings not having the
energy, eyesight, creativity etc. they once had?

And do you know about any people in their forties who were laid off so
that the businesses they worked for can replace them with people in
    their twenties?

That's what my friend who's about to turn 46 told me has happened to
her and her friends. She said that up until the 1990s, that people in
their 40s could always find work. This is a new phenomenon, according
to things she has noticed and heard from other people her age!"

That's sad. But it's also motivation for 40yr olds to create their own money and jobs.

Its pretty scary. I started bartending 8 years ago, and I still do once a week or so. Its startling how many 30-40 year old ex-business professionals are coming in looking for jobs as waiters, hosts, etc. They have been laid off years ago and are desperate at this point to find ANYTHING that will bring in some income.

That right there is my motivation. I'd rather have my job security in my own hands.

LOL I'm 48. Been self employed for most of my life. That's exactly the reason I would never work for anybody or any company.

I loath anyone who can't adopt a new skill set. I guess that includes most of my "peers" - they're right, I wouldn't hire a 48 year old either. :)

Three years ago, at the beginning of the bust I was in the operating Engineers. May of that year, I was number 6 on the out of work list. In October when I flew back to the RP, I was still number 6. I have a friend still in Nevada that has only worked 2 weeks in the last 2 years, and another that made 15K last year but has not worked a day this year. Season is over for most in October, so he is in bad shape.

I honed my skills and earn my money online. I have never looked back. I will stay in the Third World!

    Same in UK.

You can be an alien with technological knowledge for he job but if the interviewer dont like you you ad it or the employer say female fancies a younger person your fucked.
And they say there is no discimination on the application forms.

Yea both my parents are over 55 and recently jobless and haven't gotten jobs yet...

Both had very high paying jobs, so we invested in this house while the housing market was going up. Now they are BOTH jobless and we have been teetering at losing the house for almost 7 months now.

My mom is trying to get into making her own money, so she is trying to rent the extra room out, and trying to get into selling things on eBay... Too bad I can't just get her into SEO or managing two VAs to get some serious work done...

Problem is that its tough making a decision on investing money and time into something where you are NOT fully sure if it will make enough or any money at all... plus she's gotta go through the entire IM learning curve.. she still thinks that everything online is a scam. I guess it kinda is if you don't know about BHW yet

It's tough for many people, but I'm over 40 and realize that I can't count on anyone else for my income. That's why I got involved in IM and other online ventures. I don't want a "job" which enslaves me. I kinda like my freedom.

see, i prefer to hire older employees. they are more responsible, more reliable, and think before they act. whenever i hire younger employees i regret it. older ones i don't. another thing i hate to hire is single mothers because they always want to call off if their kid is sick or some shit. i am 28 by the way....

i can assure everybody it's not just an American (US) phenomenon, same here in Hungary
i'm not over 40, but i can also see how things goes
if any of my parents would lost their job, they'll have a very hard time to find a new one that's for sure, maybe my father is in a better situation because he can do physical work, but both of them are over 50

    lol phenomenen LOL

guys maybe you should wake up.This is no phenomenen its a deep financial crisis which is even bigger than before the ww2.
There will be more and more unemployed people coming and first people it hits its always the older one.
Even working for yourself on IM wont safe you as ecommerce and tourism will always go down first as people need to pay for place to live and for their food. The rest is second choice

im in my mid40s and it's the same thing here in asia (at least in my country). because people our age, with our experience, demand much in terms of pay and benefit. but in the high unemployment rate situation, senior jobseekers are at a disadvantage and employers usually pick the cheaper younger people due to economic reasons.

that's why i am in this field for 5 years now and i intend to be in im and never go back to corporate life.

    Of course.

I have a guy that's in his late 40's doing appointment booking for me. It's great because he shares his 25 years of business expertise with me.

Marketing won't save you? Sorry, I disagree. Even in the case of ecommerce - people will ALWAYS be buying things. Period.

In the U.S. there are age discrimination laws for people 40 and up so it's not exactly a bad idea to sue a company if they let you go for the wrong reasons. It is nice to have lawyers as friends ;)
