So I'm looking to buy a brand new iPhone, but it appears that the 3.1.3 firmware cannot be unlocked according to a couple searches I performed on teh interwebz. Apparently blackra1n can't do it, which is a shame because damn does that George kid know how to make things simple.

So does anyone know how to safely unlock an iPhone 3G S with 3.1.3 firmware? Which program to use?

Also what's all this whining about jailbreaking issues with the 3G S?

you cant unlock it unless you have a baseband thats 5.11. If your baseband is higher than 5.12 then theres a good chance you cant get it unlocked. I have a 3g atm thats unlocked for t-mobile and it rocks!! :D

Thanks for the reply repsol - could you go into more detail on why you like it so much?

Also how old is your 3G? And where can I find out the baseband of my iPhone if I buy one? Is it in settings somewhere? Or on the box? In the box?

Also, what is a baseband? (heard of it but NO idea what it is or does)

Does anyone know what baseband the new iPhone 3G S 3.1.3 is by chance?

    Thanks

You can check it under setting-->info..

Well if you have the 3g you can actually downgrade the baseband if you accedentally updated to 3.1.3 which also updates your baseband.. But 3GS doesnt have this feature yet.. this is called fussyband..

    3gs with 3.1.3 --> baseband : 05.12.01

you can jailbreak the 3.1.3 firmware on all phones, with snowbreeze..

Baseband is the "thing" that communicated between the operativ system and the phone..

When you insert a new simcard, the baseband is the thing that checks it and find the cellular provider..

I just love this phone as I always listen to my music on it, and that I can add some crazy apps and all kinds of shit. I just love the iphone because its so simple to use, and that no other phone can even come to close to what apple has came up with. Anyways, the baseband is the modem firmware, its just like a firmware on your phone. Apple updates this so you dont have a chance to unlock the phone, but we know theres ways around that ;) . As for my 3g, I have the 16gb 3g iphone (white one) and its only a couple of months old. You can find your baseband by going to settings >general>about> and then you go down to modem firmware. If your gonna buy the 3gs MAKE SURE that you ask for the basband firmware so that you dont have to wait months to unlock it, like I had to when i bought my 3g :(. If you have any questions or if any of you guys need help with your iphone then hit me up on aim or msn and ill b glad to help ya :)

Is 3.1.3 05.12.01 the baseband that you can't unlock? And thats what all the new 3G S's have now? (at least it can't be unlocked yet?)

So even if you have the 3gs with 3.1.3 --> baseband : 05.12.01, you can still jailbreak it with snowbreeze without any negative repercussions?

Thanks for being so willing to help. I'll definitely contact you.

What's the work around? And what do you mean by "they update this so you don't have a chance to unlock it"? Like after you turn on the phone there's an automatic update or what? (sorry if I tried way too hard on that one haha)

What do you mean by ask for the baseband firmware? Like ask what baseband firmware the phone is before buying? Or ask for it to be set to a specific baseband firmware?

Also, is there such a thing as factory unlocked 3G S iphones? Apparently there are top rated sellers selling them on egay and I just wanted to confirm whether they actually exist or not.

yep you can unlock your iphone IF the baseband is 5.12.01 (which is currently what I have atm too). You can still jailbreak the iphone even if you update it, but you cannot unlock it. Once you update the firmware, so does the baseband, and its hard as fuck to downgrade it back, so dont do it!! lol. As for why apple does the baseband crap, its because so that the iphone just runs att and not tmobile or any other sim carrier. Like I said before, If your gonna buy an iphone off ebay, just ask for a screen shot for the About section of the iphone, cause in there it tells you the firmware and the baseband (modem firmware) numbers, and then for sure you can tell if it unlockable or not. If you want to save yourself the time and effort of going through all the unlocking stuff, you can just buy a factory unlocked iphone, but those are a lot more expensive. Shoot me a message/reply if you got any more questions :)

Yeah I've seen those factory unlocked phones on ebay, but are they actually factory unlocked? Like why would Apple make unlocked iphones if they try so hard to make their locked iphones extremely difficult to unlock? Isn't the whole point of locking them to make sure people use ATT since that's who Apple has the iphone contract with? So why would they sell unlocked iphones that could be used with other carriers?

Yep, you can even get the unlocked phones at an ATT store, but I think you would still have to sign a contract to get the phone even though its unlocked. I would just get it off egay if i were you, but I would make sure that it is factory unlocked first with the seller. Apple has started selling unlocked iphones cause half of the ppl who sign the contract cancel it after a month so they can keep the phone and pay the termination fee. its cheaper in the long run if you just pay for the phone then to get a 2 yr contract for it

I got an iPhone 3GS two weeks ago from the Apple Store.. It was FW 3.1.2 - I Jailbroke it in 2mins with no prior knowledge with the subject.

As soon as I Jailbroke it my wifi stopped working, but all you need to do is reset your network settings and it started working great, this is why people are moaning I'm guessing, but it's a simple fix.

I advise you go to the Apple store, ask what firmware is on the iphones to double check. You will be fine, if worst comes to worst and it's 3.1.3, which I doubt, take it back for a refund & get one second hand one from Amazon/eBay.

Wow. That never occured to me.

EDIT: Just if anyone is wondering, its costs $175 to cancel after the first month of service. So for a 3G S 16gb the costs would look like this:

    iPhone 3G S 16gb: $199
    data plan: $30
450 minute plan (lowest plan available): $40
    activation fee: $36
sales tax (will vary by state): $15.50
    cancellation fee: $175
    _________
    Total: $495.50

So it would cost roughly $500 to get a brand new iPhone from AT&T and then free yourself from the AT&T contract and unlock for use with say Tmobile.

So the new phones are being made with 3.1.2, not 3.1.3? I guess this would mean all 3G S iphones are being sold with 3.1.2 firmware, but then when you go to the App store or something you get an automated update that says "would you like to update to the latest firmware (3.1.3)?" kinda like what many software programs do every so often like ccleaner for example? Or am I totally off?

Also what did you use to jailbreak it? Blackra1n? And are you using it on tmobile or ATT?

Yeah you are right, it is cheaper if you get the contract and cancel it by paying all that bs. I totally forgot about that and I thank you for bringing that up haha. And no, you wont be forced to upgrade your firmware if you go to the app store. It has never happened to me, and I doubt it will happen in the future. Im pretty sure the iphones sold are now have 3.1.3, but I could be wrong. So your best bet is to go with att for a month and cancel the phone after. O yeah, if your gonna go that route , one tip is that you MUST make one phone call lasting 30 secs in order to cancel it, or you cannot cancel it at all. So just make one phone call the day before you cancel it, and you should be good to go :) PS: if your going to get it, then get the white one, the black one gets too messy!! :p

Yeah that's what I thought too, but in an above post webdesign said he bought one at the Apple store 2 weeks ago and it came with 3.1.2. Hopefully they still are coming that way, but DAMN - 500 bucks for a cell phone is absurd. However, what's even more absurd is the price of a decent AT&T plan ($130/month for unlimited everything last time I checked).

So there's no way (at least yet) to downgrade to 3.1.2 from 3.1.3? And the whole baseband issue brings up a whole other suit of problems... seems there's no way to downgrade your baseband either (at least not yet)? Or no?

The white one is my favorite too - believe me I know all about ugly oil smears on shiny black plastic! :p
