Every time this happens I just have to shake my head in disbelief..

I often buy some domains with plans to build out the sites later.. Sometimes I'll quickly slap something up on them with some keyword rich text and do a quick index blast just so google will index them and will "know" what it's supposed to be about.. Plus it will "age" a little.

More often than not though I don't have a lot of time so I'll just put up a PHP index page with a proper site title (the domain names and the site title always have the keyword phrase in them), the site title in an H1 tag and then just the date near the bottom using php so it changes every day.

The "sites" with just the H1 tag almost always end up in the top 10 for a few days at least.. In fact I've got one that been in the top 10 for months now.. I'm almost afraid to actually put something real on it now as I just know it will drop in the SERPs until I get some real backlinks to it.. LOL

So the lesson here.... Make sure you use the H1 tag for your keyword titles etc. It's still important to google.

I've read that in order to put the H1 tag, you just need to place <h1>main keyword here</h1>? Is that true?

There's also the option to click on the "kitchen sink" option in Wordpress and choose Header 1. Is it really that easy? How many H1 can we put? Can I place an h1 tag on every post?

Yes, its as easy as that (for WP). You should be using only one instance of each header tag and in decending order on the page i.e. H1 at the top, H2 sub headline, H3 another sub headline etc. Use your key phrase or a variation of it within the H2 and H3 tags but use just your target key term in the H1 tag.

You might want to look at your WP theme (if you are using WP) as the majority of themes will use the H1 tag as the post title - you therefore do not want to manually input another H1 tag within the post itself which would result in duplicate H1 tags on the published page.....

So I can't put an H1 tag on every post?

Also, how do I check in WP if the H1 tag is already there? I checked the page source and here's what I saw:

    <h1 id="site-title"><span><a href="my site's URL is here" title="My Main Keyword" rel="home">My Main Keyword</a></span></h1>

Is that fine? I don't have to put h1 tags anymore?

H1 is a really important onsite SEO tool. I have found it a lot more important than keyword density. I have found that having the keyword in the meta title and in the URL is also very important.

It looks as though your site title is using the H1 tag which is being used on every page. In my view this is not good seo practice and you may want to look at another theme which uses the post title as the H1 tag. Before I install a theme I will always check the demo version to see where the H1 tag is being used - for the most part they are contained within the post title which is fine - in this case you would not need to input another H1 tag within the post itself.

Thanks! That's WP's basic theme. I think it's called TwentyTen or something like that. It's weird that it practices bad SEO.

When I look at a demo version, how can I check if it uses H1 in title only and not pages?

Sorry I don't understand, can't we put the H1 tag in each post? I do it on my blog posts on WordPress and I think it's the one of the best way to do SEO.

you can put the h1 title on each page...which, depending on how you setup WP, may not be each post. I currently don't do individual posts in my WP template, but actual pages. Each page has only 1 H1 tag, either specifying the keyword I'm targeting for that page, or if the main page, etc. is the site name/title.

When looking at the demo site or your own theme simply go to the live webpage and view the source code. Search for the H1 tags and look to see how many times it is used and where. Do this for both posts and pages because as Seuss mentioned they maybe different for each.

From memory Twenty Ten theme uses H1 tag within the post title - in this case you would not need to manually enter an H1 tag when writing your posts because it will be automatically input by the theme itself.

Every SEO guy/girl know that H1 is very impotent, its what your page is talking about, the subject, keyword.

Yup, if I had to choose one and leave one, I'd choose my H1 over proper KW density EVERY day of the week. I've found the same results as the OP, a straight keyword H1 works wonders in the SE's.

I've tested the H1 tag and have a few front page rankings without it. Plus, I've done research (did more today in a few markets) and there are lots of sites without H1.

It does help and I recommend that you use it, but sometimes you can rank without it. I have noticed that now, it's more about content quality, quality links, social, video, and all that good stuff.

Currently updating my site that will allow for each dynamic page to have its own set of keywords (I have hundreds) and researched SEO text. I noticed that <h1> and even <h2> tags played an important role awhile back. A must have for any site wanting good onsite SEO in my opinion.

Yes h1 is still very important. Though people would say that H1 and meta tags are not of much importance nowadays but I have found ample proof that they are of significant importance. I also purchase a lot of domains (over a 100 domains now in my kitty at various registrars) and I do not have time to work on them for several years and I still keep on renewing and purchasing new ones. And there are 2 burst in SERPs for the domain keyword. As soon as it is established it reaches on the first page or so for a medium level keyword (same as domain name) and then it goes down after no fresh content is added. But again after a few months or a few years it returns back near the top even with limited content. So, both website age and H1 tag hold importance still.
