After spending about 8 hours going through a fair amount of On-Page SEO I wanted to share the results after 1 week. It was a complete surprise to me how much this On-Page session helped in rankings. This is an eCommerce site and each of these rankings is for a product page, although there might be some overlap in the products. No links have been added in this week. I'd done some basic, but not horrible on-page before this.

    Google Rank Google Difference Competition
    37 Entered 1
    77 Entered 1
    100 Entered 1
    188 Entered 1
    195 Entered 1
    243 Entered 1
    255 Entered 1
    80 +57 1
    29 +55 1
    107 +52 1
    115 +48 1
    54 +43 1
    37 +41 N/A
    19 +31 1
    124 +30 0.33
    134 +28 1
    79 +25 0.66
    21 +22 N/A
    33 +22 1
    136 +19 1
    36 +18 1
    145 +16 N/A
    67 +15 1
    138 +13 1
    8 +11 N/A
    34 +11 1
    67 +8 1
    62 +6 1
    High competition = 1, Medium Competition = .66.
Sorry apparently I can't add images yet.

I was ranking #5 - #50 with low competition keywords (~70 spm). All of the keywords that have 'Entered' were 800 - 6,000 spm.

    Here's what I did:

    1) Ensured that there were no duplicate Meta Titles or Meta Descriptions.
    2) Checked 404's (there were a couple)
    3) Added Meta Titles and Descriptions to all categories. (about 25% were missing)
    4) Checked ALT tags. (a few missing)
    5) Ensured there were no duplicate keywords in the categories/breadcrumbs.
    6) Changed the menu structure to (Low or NA Comp. KW Descriptor + Product Category)/ (Medium Comp. KW + Product Category) / High Comp. Product Name

It was a surprise how much this helped, after reading phpbuilt OnPage Guide I have more work to do but I'm pretty happy so far.

I was thinking about it ... but's it a B2B eCommerce site in an irrelevant niche for most members so I didn't think there would be much interest. If there's some interest I definitely will.

If you will add some content (1000+ words) on your category pages and create a silo for it, I'm sure that you will be astonished of how much it matters.
eCommerce website lack 1 thing, content, you have to add it as they will rank way better when it comes to buying intent.

It's on the list of things to do. Currently I have no content on the category pages. Also, I'm trying to see exactly what a silo'ed category would look like ... I've seen some posts so I have some reading to do.

It's just put out by the ranking software ... which I think it gets from the KeyWord Tool in Google AdWords.

I just did everything by hand. It takes more time but this is what humans see ... so it's worth the time in my opinion.

Break your Meta Descriptions into 2 parts. The first part should be descriptive about the product. The second part should make the viewer want to find out more information. I'm looking at doing A/B testing on not finishing the sentence to leave the viewer hanging.

Example: Let's say your product is a Black T-shirt with a sports team logo.

Black Sports Team T-Shirt | Store Name
This T-Shirt is heavy duty, made from organic cotton. The sports team logo is an original artistic styling of the sports team logo that looks ...

oh wow you're 200 in rank for a high competition keyword. That's so badass. Oh killer onpage SEO. What you get like 3 visits a month with those ranking? Really not something to brag about. Call me when you're #1 for "forex" and then I'll be impressed.

I'm sensing a bit of sarcasm.

This isn't bragging, it's a process, it's demonstration of how you can change small things to produce some decent gains. It was done so that people might take a second look at the small details and hopefully it will help thier sites.

If you can get to #1 overnight for 'forex' then good for you, but your not helping.

You're not really helping either. You're trying to show people the importance of "onsite SEO," which usually is misconstrued by the so called experts around here. Being 200 is about as good as having no site at all.

These are small changes that are part of a process, it's the beginning of that process I'm not even close to done. I'm certainly no expert, I wanted to show was the simple steps and the increase.

Sites don't just enter into a #1 position in a week for all keywords, they gain ranking from 200 to 100 etc. That's pretty basic internetting knowledge or so I thought. Seagull posting.

You realize that you could be #200 by just installing wordpress with the default theme and a "hello world" post, right?

Right ... and then you move up in rankings by creating content, structuring that content and building links.

Your getting it ... this trolls a little slow but he'll catch on.
