Google algorithms are ever changing, I know not long ago it wasn't mandatory but a luxury to use niche related backlinks. Mass blog comments use to be one of the top backlinking methods [ScrapeBox] that people now avoid using on their money site, article directories are controversial; some say it works, other complain it caused ranking drops... so I tend to avoid using them on my money site, even EzineArticles. People were posting on BHW a few days ago they were getting messages in WMTs for using Press Releases for backlinkings, so suffice to say, what worked yesterday won't work tomorrow. Searching the forums for answers is a waste of time because nobody cares what SEO worked in 2012. What's important is what is working now...

That said, who has data that about niche related backlinks? I know it is ideal, but is it mandatory? Is it now an automatic penalty for putting your health related link on a iphone website that is DA82, 22 OBLs, 16 years old... and is a PR7 that has over 300,000+ quality backlinks? Would you place your health link on the PR7 over a PR3 health site that is a DA16, 200 backlinks and is under 1 year old?

These are hypothetical questions. Looking to see if anyone has any experience or data in the current state of the algorithm, not what may have worked 6 months to 2 years ago.

A lot of people regurgitate the same things over and over in SEO, I can tell you from my experience it doesn't matter. I surround my backllinks with niche related content but other than that it doesn't matter IMHO. I have private blog networks that are about all different crap and they only help. So far what I have seen it doesn't matter.

Not mandatory, proof = SAPE works. It's just one of many factors.

It can not hurt but I am going to test this on a new site and keyword. This keyword will ONLY be used on niche specific sites to see how it goes. May do it for the whole site but will see.

Having niche relevant back-links is useful as always. All you need is the content is niche relevant rather than links placed in garbage content. But all other backlinks from few old age methods are still useful and giving results. Having diverse backlinks portfolio is always safe.

At current time, Even google can't able to tell the exact method to rank lol.

    Sooooooooo over-rated.

You just have to look to SAPE and Private Networks to see that non-related links still work.

Furthermore of course Cutts and others will tell you niche related is a must, because it would be embarrassing to say that any strong link from any site will help you game their flawed algorithm. Remember they are all about building communities and crap like that and singing songs around campfires.

Sure I guess you can say niche related is ideal, but any high PR non-spam link is fine no matter what the niche.

These fools can't even serve relevant Adsense ads to websites, let alone program a machine that can figure out whether 2 websites are niche related. At this time only humans can determine that in my opinion. I could be wrong, but as long as non-related links keep putting sites on page 1 I'm gonna believe they can't figure it out yet.

Maybe in the future, but as of now no way.

Few weeks ago I found a niche that was interesting to me. I checked the top ranking sites and the #1 was very very simple site. So simple that I couldn't even believe it was holding the top position. Using ahrefs I found out that it has thousands of backlinks and 99% of them were NOT niche related. (Actually really garbage backlinks.) Hope its helpful for you :)
